680 HISTORY OF CAMBRIA COUNTY
    Dr. Martin E. Baback is recognized as one of the leading physicians and surgeons of Cambria County, engaged in the practice of his profession at Cambria City. He was born in Szarvas, County Bekes, Hungary, Nov. 17, 1883, and is a son of Martin and Julia (Bathory) Baback. Mr. Baback is deceased and his wife resides in Hungary.
    After completing is early education, Martin E. Baback attended the Kalvzsvar College of Pharmacy, at Kalvzsvar, Hungary. He emigrated to this country in December, 1903, and after spending three years in New York City as an associate pharmacist, in 1905 he was licenses a R. P., State of Pennsylvania. From 1906 until 1909 he engaged in the drug business at Scranton, Pa., after which he established his present drug business, the Red Cross Pharmacy, in Cambria City. In 1913 he entered the Medical School of the University of Pittsburgh, from which he was graduated in 1917. His intern work was taken at Conemaugh Valley Memorial Hospital, Johnstown, and since 1918 he has engaged in the practice of medicine.
    On Aug. 27, 1907, Mr. Baback was married to Miss Veronica Kaucheck of Scranton, Pa. They have a daughter, Ethel Rose.
    During the World war Doctor Baback served as a member of the United States Intelligence Service and was active in the influenza period. He is a member of the Cambria County Medical Society, Pennsylvania Medical Society, and the American Medical Association. He is a member of the staff of Mercy Hospital, Johnstown. Doctor Baback holds membership in the Catholic Church and Elks Lodge. He and his wife are well known in Johnstown and have many friends.




    Benjamin F. Faunce is among the substantial and highly esteemed citizens of Johnstown, where he is superintendent of the car shops, bolt and rivet shops and structural yards of the Bethlehem Steel Company. He was born at Norway, Maine, Dec. 18, 1878, and is a son of Frank W. and Maria (Shackley) Faunce.
    Frank W. Faunce was born at Hebron, Maine, Sept. 16, 1848, and his wife was born at Norway, Maine, April 27, 1846. He was educated in Hebron Academy, a private school, and later went to Boston, Mass., where he remained for three years. He learned the shoe manufacturing business, and in 1882 engaged in the retail shoe business at Norway, Maine,
