connected with the Lincoln Coal Company until 1916, at which time he was appointed postmaster of Nanty Glo. He resigned after one term and in 1920 became associated with the Whitman & Barnes Manufacturing Company of Akron, Ohio. He later returned to Nanty Glo in the employ of the Springfield Coal Company.
In 1890 Mr. Mash was married to Miss Mary Jane Toohey, the daughter of John and Mary Jane Toohey. She died in 1910, leaving the following children: John born in 1892, lives in Oklahoma; Mary, married Charles Rice, lives at Latrobe, Pa.; Pearl, married Michael J. Yates, lives in Pittsburgh; and Henry, lives in Pittsburgh.
On Sept. 2, 1916, Mr. Mash married Miss Margaret McCabe, the daughter of James and Jane (Lee) McCabe, natives of Durham County, England, who came to this country in 1882 and settled in Clearfield County, Pa. Mr. McCabe died Jan. 30, 1918, and is buried at Morrisdale, Pa. His widow resides at Akron, Ohio. Mr. and Mrs. McCabe had seven children: Margaret Mash; James, lives in Akron, Ohio; John, lives at Philipsburg, Pa.; M.E., lives at Akron; Andrew J., died October, 1918, while serving in the World War; Alice, married John McIntyre, lives at Akron; and Helen, married Fred Price, lives at Akron.
Mr. Mash is a Democrat and while a resident of Barnesboro served as assessor. He is a Democratic committeeman of Cambria County. For a number of years he served as president of the United Mine Workers of America. He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, the Knights of St. George and Ancient Order of Hibernians.
Jonathan R. Nicholson, division superintendent of the Pennsylvania Coal & Coke Corporation, Spangler, Pa., is a native of England. He was born April 1, 1873, in Hebrun, England, a son of James and Jane (Stevens) Nicholson.
Both James Nicholson and his wife were natives of Hebrun, England. He began life as a shaft sinker in the mines and followed that business for the German government in the Ruhr Valley and returned to England, where he was an official as a foreman and overseer in the shafts in Hebrun and Holwell, England. In 1879 he came to the United States and settled in Morris Run, Tioga County, Pa., and located with the Morris Run Coal Company as a miner.
