In 1896 Mr. Nicholson was married to Miss Emma Cence, a daughter of Adam and Elizabeth Cence. Mr. Nicholson died in 1898 and is buried at Hastings, Pa. To this marriage one son, Cecil was born in 1898. He married Bernice Copeland and they reside in Long View, Wash., where he is a millwright. They have two children, Jonathan R., Jr., and Thomas.
Cecil Nicholson is a veteran of the World War. He enlisted in the Marine Corps and served from April 10, 1917, until Aug. 13. 1919. He served in the Fourth Brigade, Second Division, A. E. F., France. He saw service in all the important engagements in France and also was in every battle that this company took part in. His Company was cited for bravery on three different occasions. Mr. Nicholson also was with the Army of Occupation until his discharge.
Mr. Nicholson was married the second time in November 1903, to Miss Christine Nelson, a daughter of James and Jean (Carbarns) Nelson. The Nelson family were natives of Scotland, who came to America and settled in Morris Run, Pa., where Mr. Nelson was a miner. Later the family removed to Hastings, where the father died in 1901 and the mother in January, 1920. They are both buried in Hastings. The children of James and Jean (Carbarns) Nelson were: Janet, died in infancy, buried in Scotland; James and William, deceased, buried at Morris Run, Pa.; Alex, buried in West Laurel Hill Cemetery, Philadelphia; Mary 1st, died in infancy, buried in Morris Run; Thomas, mine foreman for Keystone Mines, resides in Hastings, Mary 2nd, married Thomas Townsend, a mine foreman, resides in Spangler; Jean married Joseph Carter, resides in Nanticoke, Pa.; Crawford, Ford agency, resides in Philadelphia; and Mrs. Nicholson. Two children died in infancy. To Jonathan R. and Christine (Nelson) Nicholson the following children have been born: May, a graduate of Barnesboro High School, a graduate of Templar University, Philadelphia, class of 1926, and was editor of the Templar Year Book, being the only girl to hold that position; Donald, a graduate of Barnesboro High School, Bethlehem Preparatory College and a member of the 1928 class of Bucknell University; and Jonathan, Jr., born May 10, 1914, a student, at home.
Mr. Nicholson is a member of the Presbyterian Church at Marstellar, in which he serves as trustee and treasurer. Fraternally he is a member of the I.O.O.F. of Gallitzen, Summit Lodge F. & A.M. 312, Coudersport Consistory, 32nd degree, Coudersport, Pa., Jaffa Temple, A.A.O.N.M.S., Altoona, Pa., Altoona Shrine Club, Merit Club of Barnesboro, and the Kiwanis Club of Northern Cambria County. Politically he is a Republican. Mrs.
