dent of the council. He is a member of the Knights of Columbus, Moose, and Elks Club of Altoona No. 102. Mr. Walsh is an excellent citizen and an asset to his community. Samuel R. Green, Jr., outside foreman of Spangler No. 4 Maderia Coal Mine, is a native of Pennsylvania. He was born Jan. 27, 1884, at Brisbin, Clearfield County, and is a son of S. R. and Mary (Rowland) Green. S. R. Green was born in England in 1855. He was a son of Samuel and Sarah Green, who emigrated to America from England about 1868 and settled first at Broad Top, Huntington County, Pa., where Samuel Green and his son, S. R. followed mining. To Samuel and Sarah Green 12 children were born, three of whom are till living: S. R.; George, lives in Johnstown; and Mrs. Martha Filer, lives in Maryland. Samuel Green died at the age of 55 and is buried at Orbisonia, and his wife is buried in Brisbin, Pa. S. R. Green followed mining all his life and for the past five years has been living retired in Barnesboro. He was superintendent of the John Wills mines of West Virginia. His wife, a daughter of Hugh and Sarah Rowland, was born at Broad Top. The father was a native of Wales and the mother a native of Huntington County, Pa. They are both deceased and are buried at Broadtop, Pa. To Hugh and Sarah Rowland were born 12 children, and they adopted two more. Four of their children are living, as follows: John, lives in Patton; Eliza, the wife of Jonathan Andrews, lives in Houtsdale; Susie, the wife of Wilbur Adams, lives at Tyrone, Pa.; and Mary, the mother of the subject of this sketch. To S. R. and Mary (Rowland) Green 10 children were born, six of whom are now living: Samuel, died in infancy, buried in Brisbin; Maude, died at the age of six, buried in Brishbin; Paul, died at the age of seven, buried in Brisbin; David, died in infancy, buried at Brisbin: Pearl, married A. H. Maines, lives in Barnesboro; H. R., lives in Philipsburg, where he has been with the Maderia Hill Coal Company for 14 years, and for the past two years has been general superintendent; S. R. Jr., the subject of this sketch; Mary, married Richard Sharp, lives at Blairsville; Caleb, manager of the A. & P. store at New Castle, Pa.; and Sarah, married John Bush. S. R. Green, Jr., was reared at Brisbin, Pa., and attended school until he was 13 years of age, when he began working in the mines at Gazzam, |
