the Eclectic College in Cincinnati, Ohio, from which he was graduated in 1881. He commenced his professional practice in West Fairfield in association with his father, and continued there for three years, then went to Larimer, in the same county, where he practiced for the next four years. He then removed to Johnstown, May 30, 1889, and has won the confidence and respect of the large number of patients as well as of his fellow practitioners. He has offices at 408 Franklin Street.
During the Spanish-American war Doctor Taylor served as captain of Company H, Fifth Regiment, Pennsylvania Volunteers, which was organized pursuant to general orders No. 7. The company reached Mount Gretna April 28, 1898, and was mustered into the U. S. service May 11th. They broke camp at Mount Gretna, May 17, 1898, and proceeded by rail to Camp George H. Thomas, in Georgia, arriving there May 19th. There the company was assigned to the First Brigade, Third Division, First Corps of the Volunteer Army. May 20th they marched three miles and made camp along the Alexander Bridge Road. August 22nd they left camp by rail for Camp Hamilton, Ky. September 17th they were all granted a 30-day furlough and directed to proceed to their home station. They participated in the peace jubilee at Philadelphia, Oct. 27, 1898, and were mustered out of service November 7th. Captain Taylor was highly complimented by his superior officers for the splendid services he rendered in command of his company. In 1898 he received a direct order from the secretary of war to go on special recruiting service.
On June 27, 1889, Doctor Taylor was married to Miss Ella P. Gore, the daughter of the late Thomas and Amanda (Mitchell) Gore, whose children were: John, Willis, James, George, Mrs. J. W. Barnett, Amanda J., and Ella P. Thomas Gore's family were among the first settlers of Johnstown. The children of Dr. J. Swan and Ella P. (Gore) Taylor were: A child died in infancy; Amanda M., married James Russel Leach, and attorney of Ebensburg, and their children are: James Russel Jr., Ellen Augusta, and Nancy Taylor; James Thomas, born July 7, 1898, a graduate of Johnstown High School, attended the College of Medicine, Dartmouth College, served throughout the World war with the One Hundred Tenth Infantry, Twenty-eighth Division. He enlisted as a private and at the time of his discharge held the commission of first lieutenant. He is now an interne at Memorial Hospital and will complete his course at the University of Pennsylvania; and John Ogden, born July 17, 1904. He is a student at Kiski Preparatory School.
