also sugar refineries. He was on the executive committee and advisory board of the Pennsylvania, New York, New Jersey and Delaware Wholesale Groceries Association. He was a director in several banks and many local business enterprises. He was a lifelong member of St. John Gaulbert's Catholic Church and took an active interest in church affairs. He was affiliated with the Mercy Hospital as a director and member of the board of incorporators. He also was a director and one of the incorporators of the Johnstown Chamber of Commerce. Just before his death he had gone through on of his long line of achievements as chairman of the successful Mercy Hospital financial campaign, which closed the day before his death. In manner he was quiet and reserved, but had a strength of conviction which brought him through many successful undertakings. He was a member of the Johnstown Council No. 467,, Knights of Columbus; B. P. O. E. No. 175, Rotary, Kiwanis and Sunnehanna Country Club. Mr. Ryan died June 24, 1923, and was buried in St. John's Cemetery, Geistown. John C. Ryan was married in 1891 to Miss Catherine Curley, a daughter of Michael and Margaret (Bishop) Curley. Mrs. Kate C. Ryan, widow of the deceased, resides in Johnstown.
    Paul J. Ryan, second son and third child of Mr. and Mrs. John C. Ryan, is vice president and general manager of the Ryan-Correll Company, wholesale grocers, Johnstown, Pa., and was born in this city July 25, 1898. He was educated in the parochial and public schools of Johnstown. In 1906 he entered Notre Dame University, where he completed a high school course, followed by a course in finance and commerce. He later entered the law department and was graduated in 1919, being admitted to the Cambria County Bar Association in November, 1919; also the Indiana State Bar Association. He did not practice his profession but entered his father's business. Upon the death of his father, John C. Ryan, in 1923, he was elected vice president and general manager of the Ryan-Correll Company, Johnstown, Pa.
    In 1916 Mr. Ryan enlisted in the Canadian Royal Air Service. After completing his flying course, he was appointed first lieutenant in the British Air Service. He was an instructor in aerial machine guns. In 1919 he was discharged as a first lieutenant in the Royal Canadian Air Service, and returned to Notre Dame to complete his law course. Mr. Ryan is a member of St. John's Gaulbert's Catholic Church and belongs to the American Legion, Knights of Columbus, B. P. O. E. No. 175, Notre Dame Club of America, Chamber of Commerce, Sunnehanna Country Club,
