In 1891 Mr. Sheeler was united in marriage with Miss Anna J. Given, of Johnstown, Pa., and they have two children: Fred G., married Anna Boyer, a native of Germany, and they have a daughter, Dorothy Louise Sheeler; and Louise, married L. F. Berlin, lives in Johnstown, and they have a daughter, Marjorie Berlin. Hyman S. Goldstein has long been numbered among the representative merchants of Portage, where he is engaged in the general merchandise business. He was born in Poland, March 20, 1866, and is the son of Max and Mollie (Silverberg) Goldstein. Max Goldstein was born in Poland in 1813 and died in 1900. He served in the Russian army for a period of 25 years and served in the Crimean war between Russia and England. Mr. Goldstein held a high army commission at the time of his death. His wife died in 1912. To Mr. and Mrs. Goldstein the following children were born: Hyman S., the subject of this sketch; David, lives at Altoona, Pa.; and two sons, who died while serving in the Russian army. Hyman S. Goldstein was 19 years of age when he came to the United States. He spent some time at Altoona, Pa., as a peddler, and in October 1889, located at Portage, were he engaged in the general mercantile business in partnership with his cousin, A. B. Goldstein. This firm continued in business until 1909, at which time Mr. Goldstein built his fine store building at 700 Main Street, which he has since conducted. It is one of the largest department stores in this section of the county and Mr. Goldstein is accounted a reliable business man. On March 13, 1891, Mr. Goldstein was united in marriage with Miss Gussie Goldstein, of South Fork, the daughter of I. N. and Lena (Bartlestone) Goldstein, residents of Altoona. Mr. and Mrs. Goldstein have the following children: Abe, attended Portage High School and Carlyle College, is a Word war veteran, engaged in the furniture business at Lewiston, Pa.; Bertha, attended Portage High School and Penn Hall Chambers- |
