The Johnstown branch of Swift & Company was opened in May, 1924, with Mr. Hartigan as manager. The territory comprises Somerset, Cambria, Westmoreland counties, and they handle and sell 60,000 to 75,000 pounds of meat a week. The company employs eight people. D. G. Seese, principal of Nanty Glo High School, is a veteran of the World war and a prominent citizen of Cambria County. He was born at Scalp Level, Pa., Jan 16, 1891, and is the son of William G. and Anna (Dietz) Seese. William G. Seese, who lives retired at Rummel, Somerset County, Pa., was born at Scalp Level, Feb 21, 1857. His wife was born in Berlin, Pa., March 18, 1861. during his active career Mr. Seese was extensively engaged in farming and stock raising and owned 117 acres of land. He has served Paint Township, Somerset County, as school director for 12 years, tax collector for 12 years, and an assessor for two years. He is a member of the Church of the Brethren. To Mr. and Mrs. Seese were born seven children: Frank B., lives at Johnstown; Alma, married Mahlon Hoffman, lives at Johnstown; Elva, a teacher, lives at home; Myra, married George Berkey, lives at Johnstown; D. G., the subject of this sketch; Ida, married Jacob Berkey, lives at Johnstown; and Carmon D., a teacher, lives at home. D. G. Seese received his early education in the schools of Paint Township. He then taught school in Paint Township for six terms, in Paint Borough for one term, spent one term in Richland Township, Cambria County, and at the same time attended summer courses at Juniata College. On Feb 12, 1918, he volunteered for service in the World war and was assigned to Company H. Eightieth Regiment Infantry, Camp Lee, Va., and later transferred to the U. S. Medical Corps. He was discharged Feb 12, 1919, after which he completed his course at Juniata College in 1923. Mr. Seese was then appointed teacher of history and mathematics in the elementary department of the Nanty Glo schools, and in 1924 was promoted to teacher of mathematics and English in the local high schools. The following year he was elected principal. On June 3, 1925, Mr. Seese was united in marriage with Miss Verna I. Statler, the daughter of Lewis and Elizabeth Ellen (Seese) Statler. Mr. |
