    Thomas B. Evans, who lives retired at Nanty Glo, is well and favorably known in Cambria county. He was born at Morris Run, Pa., Oct. 15, 1872, and is the son of John P. and Katherine (Williams) Evans.
    John P. Evans, deceased was a native of Wales. He began life as a farmer and was later a steel worker at Dowliss, Wales. He came to this country in 1869 and settled at Morris Run, Pa., where he worked in the mines. He was living retired at the time of his death, Feb 27, 1904. His wife, also a native of Wales, died in 1888, and they are buried at Blossburg, Pa. Mr. and Mrs. Evans were the parents of the following children: Edward John, deceased; Thomas B., the subject of this sketch; Anna, married Archibald Husted, lives at Morris Run; Rowland, lives at Nanty Glo; William, lives at Canton, Pa.; David, deceased; and four children died in infancy.
    After completing his schooling in Tioga County, Pa., Thomas B. Evans entered the mines. He came to Nanty Glo in January, 1905, and entered the employ of the Webster Coal Mining Company, with whom he was identified in 1920, when he retired. Mr. Evans served as street commissioner of Nanty Glo from 1920 until 1926.
    In 1894 Mr. Evans was married to Miss Mary Ann Scaife, the daughter of George and Elizabeth (Lowther) Scaife, natives of England and early settlers of Morris Run, Pa. Mr. Scaife was killed in the mines Nov 27, 1903. His wife died in 1906 and they are buried at Blossburg. To Mr. and Mrs. Scaife the following children were born: Margaret Elizabeth, married Henry Chapman, lives at Nanty Glo; J. W., lives at Nanty Glo; Thomas, lives at Elmira, N.Y.; George, lives at Nanty Glo; Fred, lives at Blossburg; Edward, a World war veteran, lives at Nanty Glo; Diana and Rosanna, both deceased; Frederick, deceased, and three children died in infancy. To Mr. and Mrs. Evans were born two sons: David R., born March 1, 1896, married Sarah Moody, and they have a son Bob; and Lester H., born June 11, 1903, manager of Cupps Grocery in Nanty Glo.
    David R. Evans is a veteran of the World War, having served in France with the U. S. Engineers, Twenty-ninth Regiment. He was also in Germany with the Army of Occupation. Mr. Evans is engaged in the insurance business in Nanty Glo.
    Thomas B. Evans is a Republican, a member of the Baptist Church and the Patriotic Order Sons of America. He is one of the reliable and substantial men of his community.
