Mr. Barker was a member and trustee of the Presbyterian Church and also connected with the following fraternal orders: Summit Lodge No. 312, F. and A.M., Ebensburg; Portage Chapter No 195, Royal Arch Masons, of Johnstown; Kedron Commandery No 18, of Greensburg; Highland Lodge No. 428, Independent Order of Odd Fellows, of Ebensburg; and Capt. John M. Jones Post No. 556, Grand Army of the Republic, Ebensburg. Rev. Modestus Wirtner, O.S.B., pastor of the Catholic Church at St. Boniface, is an influential and representative citizen of Cambria county. He was born in Carrolltown, Pa., March 20, 1861, and is the son of John and Catherine (Farabaugh) Wirtner. George Adam Wirtner, a blacksmith, of Altdorf, Amt . Ettenheim, Grand Duchy of Baden, German, had only one son, Nicolas, born in 1754 and died in November 1844. Nicolas Wirtner was a farmer and served for 35 yeas as mayor of the town of Altdorf. He was a man of standing and influence in his community. His first wife was Mary Sailer; his second wife was frightened to death by the rough soldiers of Napoleon, who took up their quarters in the mayor's house; the third wife was Petronilla Graber. There were 12 boys and 9 girls born to the first and third wives: Nicholas; Xavier, whose son Jacob died at Bellville, Ill; John, 1795, moved to Loretto, Pa.; Blasius, whose son George died in Buffalo, N.Y.; Landlolin; Fridolin, who removed to California; Sebastian; Joseph and Anthony, died in St. Louis, Mo.; Christian and George; Benjamin, the twelfth son, born Nov 30, 1824, and died at Carrolltown, Dec 1909; Gertrude, Rufina, Mary; Barbara, 1801-1880, died in Brooklyn, N.Y., was the wife of Valentine Miller; Magdalin, wife of Albert Knapp; Mechtild, 1812-1880, died at St. Boniface, Pa., the wife of Ambrose Hopfer; Catherine, 1820-1879, died at Altoona, Pa., the wife of Landolin Buechele; Petronilla, 1821-1900, died as the wife of John Baptist Becher. John Wirtner, 1795, had a tannery. He was thrown from a horse and killed June 24, 1848, while on the road home from Loretto. He had been married by Prince Gallitzin on Sept 6, 1836, to Mary Rufina Herzog, 1813-1846, a daughter of Domenic Herzog of Loretto, Pa. Their children were: John Baptist, Sept. 2, 1837; Dominic, Aug. 9, 1839, died in 1840; Mary Rufina, July 5, 1840, died Dec 5, 1905, the wife of Peter Parrish, at Nicktown, Pa.; Mechtild, Oct 3, 1842, died 1850, at Carrolltown, Pa.; Nicolas, Oct 8, 1844, died Jan 4, 1922, at LaPorte, Ind.
