Berwin-White Coal Company at Windber. In 1900 he went with the
Rochester and Pittsburgh Coal & Iron Company as superintendent of mines at Eleanora, Pa. Several years later he transferred to Indiana County as division superintendent of the Jefferson & Clearfield Coal & Iron Company and the Rochester & Pittsburgh Coal & Iron Company's mines. He later resigned to accept the position of superintendent of the Keystone Coal & Coke Company near Greensburg, Pa., and in 1916 was made manager of the Ebensburg Coal Company. In 1920 he resigned this position on account of ill health and spent the following year at Greensburg, Pa. In 1921 he became identified with the New River Colliers Company at Eccles, W. Va., as general manager. On July 1, 1922, he retuned to Colver as general manager of the Ebensburg Coal Company.
In 1892 Mr. Fleming was united in marriage with Martha McGhee, the daughter of James and Martha (Boner) McGhee, natives of Jefferson County, Pa., both deceased. Mr. McGhee was a Civil War veteran and a leading lumber dealer of Jefferson County for a number of years. To Mr. and Mrs. Fleming were born three children: (1) Robert M., born in 1894,
was graduated from Ithaca High School in 1913, and from Pennsylvania State College in 1917, with a degree of A. B. He enlisted July 12, 1917, in the aviation section, U. S. navy. He served in France as an engineer and was stationed on the following ships and locations: North Aeronautic Station, R. S., Philadelphia; North Aeronautic Station, Dunkirk, France;
Headquarters North Bomb Group; North Aeronautic Station, St. Inglevert, France; Antingues, France; N. T. S., Hampton Roads, Va.; N. T. C., Charleston, S. C. He was discharged March 12, 1919, as a first class quartermaster. Mr. Fleming was graduated from Columbia University in 1826 with a degree of Mining Engineer; (2) Elizabeth, a graduate of Greensburg High School, Pennsylvania College for Women with a A. B. degree and Columbia University with a M. A. degree. She taught school for three years at Derry and Tarentum, Pa., and one year at Clairton, Pa. She lives at home; (3) Martha E., a graduate of Indiana Normal School and Carnegie Institute of Technology in 1925. She taught school one year at Derry, Pa., and is now secretary of the Teachers Training School at Indiana, Pa.
Mr. Fleming is a Republican, a trustee of the Presbyterian Church and is affiliated with the Sunnehanna Country Club, Johnstown, and Ebensburg Golf Club. He is a member of the Johnstown Chamber of Commerce and Kiwanis Club of Ebensburg. Pa.
