Bank and the Johnstown State Deposit Bank. He was president of the board of directors of Mercy Hospital; he was a member of the city council and served two terms, where his judgment and active business conception won him the respect and confidence of his colleagues. He served as treasurer of the Irish Relief Fund of Johnstown and Cambria County. He was a student of municipal affairs and government, and took an active part in all civic affairs. He was always ready and willing to assist every project designed to aid the public and also gave generously of his means to assist any worthy charity. He was essentially what is popularly understood as a self made man. Whatever he attained in life he accomplished by perseverance and fidelity to lofty and ennobling ideals; its impress is permanent and worthy of emulation. He died Aug. 23, 1921, and is buried in St. John's Cemetery, Geistown, Pa.
    On June 29, 1880, Mr. Lavelle married Miss Mary Frances A. Maurey, a daughter of Francis A. and Dorothy (Worin) Maurey. They were the parents of the following children: John, born June 28, 1881, deceased; Francis, born Jan 15, 1883, deceased; Edgar, born Sept. 15, 1885, deceased; Joseph Lavelle, born Oct. 22, 1887, deceased; J. Raymond, born March 19, 1889, deceased; Mary J., born May 30, 1890; Eulalia, born Feb. 19, 1892; Paul E., the subject of this sketch. Of these children the first three perished in the flood in 1889, also Mr. Patrick Lavelle's mother, brother, and three sisters.
    Francis Maurey, father of Mrs. Lavelle, was born in Wurtemburg, Germany, and for many years previous to his death was prominently identified with coal mining interests in Pennsylvania and Maryland. At one time he was general manager for a French coal mining company operating in Luzerne County, and later built the first Borden shaft at Frostburg, Md., for the Borden Mining company, a German corporation. Mr. Maurey married Dorothy Worin, by whom he had 14 children; Catherine, married John Paules; Helen, married Henry Wegman; Frances, married Conrad Brandler; Mary Frances, married Patrick Lavelle; Amelia, Sister Lucina, St. Francis' College, Trenton, N.J.; Francis, married Alice Goodwin; Rose; Clara, married Peter Martin; Joseph, married Mary Winner; Anna, married George Church; Louisa: George: and two children who died in infancy.
    John Lavelle, the elder, grandfather of Patrick Lavelle, came to America when he was 23 years old and was by occupation a farmer. He married Jane Burke, who born him two children. John Lavelle married
