JOHNSTOWN DAILY TRIBUNE JOHNSTOWN, PA 1932 Tuesday Evening, 11 Feb 1932 page 2, column 5 Contributed by Gordon Grening PATRICK CAREY, 30, EXPIRED IN OHIO Patrick Carey, aged 30 years, a former resident of Roxbury, died January 28 in Cleveland, O., where he had been making his home for the last eight months. He was born and reared in Clearfield County. He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Maude (DeLacy) Carey; a daughter, Theresa, aged six years; his mother, a brother and several sisters. The funeral took place from the home of his brother, John Carey, in Cleveland. Prominent Young Moxham Student Became Ill Tuesday While on Visit WAS TO ENTER MINISTRY Herbert Plotts. Herbert Plotts, of 662 Cypress avenue, Moxham, who was prominent in school and junior college work here for the last few years, is dead, having passed away at 3 o’clock this morning in a hospital in Cleveland, O., where he had been since Monday, when he and Joseph Reiter, also of Moxham, motored to Cleveland to visit the John Mitchell family, relatives of the deceased, and to accompany Frank Reiter home from Oberlin College. Mr. Plotts suffered for some time from diabetes and took a relapse on Tuesday, but his condition did not become alarming until yesterday morning, when he lapsed into a semi-conscious state. His parents were called to Cleveland yesterday afternoon, but did not arrive at the hospital until late last night. Local relatives and friends were informed this morning that the body will arrive in Johnstown this evening and will be taken in charge by Picking & Son, morticians. Herbert Plotts was born in Moxham August 6, 1912, a son of Herbert W. and Mary (Reel) Plotts, of 662 Cypress avenue. He was educated in the Moxham grade schools and later attended the Cochran Junior High School where he was awarded an American Legion medal for outstanding qualities when he completed his work there. He was one of the honor students of the Johnstown High School in the class of 1929 ½ and recently finished his second year in the Johnstown Junior College where he served as President of the Student Council during the recent term. Herbert Plotts expected to enter the ministry of the United Brethren Church and had planned to complete his studies at Otterbein College, Westerville, O. The Quarterly Conference of the Park-avenue U.B. Church granted him a license to preach in April of this year and since then he has acceptably filled several of the local pulpits, including that of the Barron-avenue United Brethren Church, Morrellville. The deceased’s grandfather, the late Rev. P. W. Plotts, was a minister in the Evangelical Church in the Pittsburgh Conference for a long time. His death occurred in Moxham 20 years ago. Herbert Plotts was active in church, Sunday School and Christian Endeavor work in the Park-avenue U.B. Church for a number of years. He was received into membership during the pastorate of the Rev. R. E. Penick, now of Altoona, and was a teacher in the Sunday School at the time of his death. The deceased was a well-known trombone player and for three years was identified with the Johnstown High School Championship Band under the leadership of Ralph W. Wright. He was with the band on its trip to Joliet, Ill., In 1928, and was a member of the National High School Orchestra as a trombone player at Atlantic City in 1930. During the last few years he was member of the trombone quartet that has taken part in various church services in and about the city.   26 Jul 1932 Contributed by Lynne Canterbury ROBERT E. BERKEBILE. Kantner, July 26. -- Robert E. Berkebile, aged 22, son of Mr. and Mrs. William G. Berkebile, died this morning at 3 o'clock at the parental home here, ollowing an illness of seven months. Surviving are his parents and these brothers and sisters: Dean and Charles Berkebile, both at home; Mrs. Charles Zimmerman, of Kantner; Mrs. Ward Braucher, of Stoystown; Dorothy, Mary Louise, and Janet, all at home. Funeral services will be conducted Thursday afternoon at 2 o'clock, in charge of the Rev. W. E. Wissinger, pastor of the local United Brethren Church. Interment will be in the Otterbein Cemetery. Undertaker A. C. Berkebile, of Hooversville, prepared the body for burial. TWO ARE FINED IN FRANKLIN MIX-UP Street Commissioner and Delegate of Colored People Draw Penalties. An argument over what man should be selected for Franklin Borough street work resulted in a hearing before Burgess Michael Sewak in the Franklin Municipal building last night and in the final outcome both the defendant and the man who was expected to be the borough's star witness drew fines. Some time ago Franklin Council, acceding to the wishes of the colored people of the district that members of their race be given a share in the borough's work, appointed William Prather, colored, to recommend to the Street Commissioner, Andrew Bulna, the names of colored persons who should receive the work. A few days ago Prather took James Howard, colored, to the scene of borough work and found Robert Armstrong, also colored, but not recommended by Prather, on the project, with the result that Prather insisted, it is claimed, that his man be given the work and the other man dropped. Some words ensued, it is said, between Prather and Armstrong with Street Commissioner Bulna "in the middle." At last night's hearing Prather was charged with interfering with an officer and although he pleaded not guilty Burgess Sewak thought differently about the matter and fined the defendant $10 and costs, totaling $17.40. During the testimony of Bulna, who denied there had been any interference, the Street Commissioner is said to have admitted that he did not confer with "Council and the Burgess," as a borough ordinance provides, on the appointment of the workers. This confession aroused the Burgess, who had previously warned Bulina to get his approval before filling positions, and the Burgess then assessed another fine of $10 upon Bulna for alleged failure to comply with the ordinance.   Monday Evening, 27 Jun 1932 page 20, column 7 Contributed by Gordon Grening FORMER MUNSTER MAN EXPIRES IN ALTOONA Anthony L. Risbon, Aged 75, Native of Cambria County, Passes Away ALTOONA, June 27.–Anthony L. Risbon, aged 75, of 222 Twenty-first avenue, died yesterday at his home, following a long illness of a complication of diseases. He was a son of Garett and Veronica Risbon, and was born August 11, 1856, in Munster Township until three years ago, when he retired and moved to Altoona. He is survived by eight children and 16 grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted tomorrow morning at 1o o’clock in St. Theresa’s Catholic Church. FUNERAL OF ROBERT BERKEBILE Kantner, July 27 -- Funeral services for Robert Berkebile, aged 22, who died yesterday morning at his home here will be conducted Friday morning at 10 o'clock at the Kantner United Brethren Church. The Rev. W. E. Wissinger will officiate. Interment will be in the Otterbein Cemetery. FUNERAL OF DR. P. F. SHAFFER Somerset, July 27 -- Funeral services for Dr. Perry F. Shaffer, a former resident of Somerset who died July 20 at his home in Jacksonville, Fla., were conducted yesterday afternoon at the home of his sister, Mrs. Viola Trescher, of 259 East Main street, Frostburg, Md. Interment was in the Allegany Cemetery at Frostburg. FUNERAL OF MRS. ANNA BROWN Meyersdale, July 27 -- Funeral services for Mrs. Anna Brown, who died Monday morning at the home of her son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Zed Hoar, of Front street, will be conducted tomorrow afternoon at 2 o'clock at the Hoar home. The Rev. B. A. Black, pastor of the Amity Reformed Church, will officiate. Interment will be in the church cemetery. FUNERAL OF DR. P. J. KELLY Patton, July 27 -- Funeral services for Dr. P. J. Kelly, who died Saturday evening at his home here, following a brief illness of pneumonia, were conducted yesterday morning in St. Mary's Catholic Church. The Rev. Father Henry O. S. B., was celebrant of the requiem high mass, with the Rev. Father Adrian, pastor of St. George's Church as deacon, and the Rev. Father Willard Farren, of St. Augustine, a s sub-deacon. Burial was in the church cemetery. Active passbearers were Paul Holtz and Oscar Binder, of Hastings; George Hoppel, of Patton; Dr. C. E. Miller, 41, Dies at Local Hospital; Burial Wednesday Mrs. Freda Louise (Sann) Miller, aged 41, wife of Harry R. Miller, of Cessna, Bedford County, died yesterday morning at Memorial Hospital, following an illness of typhoid fever. Mrs. Miller was admitted to the hospital late Saturday night. She was a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Frederick Sann, sr., and was born January 1, 1891. Mr. and Mrs. Miler resided in Johnstown until three years ago, when they moved to a farm near Cessna. Freda Louise Sann and Harry M. Miller were married in June, 1910. Surviving are her mother, Mrs. Frederick Sann, of Ohio street; her husband and the following brothers and sisters: Fred Sann, jr., of Wood street; Mary, wife of Conrad Nau of Ohio street; Katherine, wife of John Schwing, of Philadelphia; Otto Sann, of Grove avenue; Charles Sann, of Topeka, Kan.; Ralph Sann, of Ohio street; Matilda, wife of Leo McAchren, of Lunen street; Hugo Sann, of Lemon street, Dale, and Anna, wife of Dr. David S. Bantley, of Coleman avenue. Her father died in 1922, and a sister, Emma, preceded her to the grave. Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday afternoon at the Sann home, 333 Ohio street, in charge of the Rev. William L. Hogg, pastor of the Grove-avenue Methodist Church. Burial will be in the Pleasantville Cemetery.
