trical engineer with the Bethlehem Steel Company, Johnstown; and Theodore, associated in business with his father. There are three grandchildren: Jean Dearmey, Harold and Marion Rasbaugh. John J. Green has been prominent in the civic and official life of Portage for many years, where he has served as justice of the peace continuously since 1894. He was born at Lykens, Pa., March 21, 1861, and is the son of John and Leah (Harvey) Green. John Green was born in Wales in 1837. When he was four years of age his parents came to the United States and settled at Akron, Ohio. He was prominently identified with the coal interests of Mount Carmel, Pa., and for many years served as burgess of that place and street commissioner. He was elected justice of the peace on two occasions, but declined the office. He died in 1924. Leah (Harvey) Green died in 1916, at the age of 76 years, and with her husband is buried at Mount Carmel. They were prominent members of the Methodist Church. Mr. and Mrs. Green had the following children: Leah, married first to Thomas Gross, deceased, and later to John Griffith, also deceased, and they had two children, Hobert and Garfield; John J., the subject of this sketch; and Gertrude, married David Penman, a civil engineer for the Lehigh Valley Coal Company, lives at Mahoning City, Pa. After attending the public schools of Mount Carmel, John J. Green entered the mines at McIntyre, where he remained for three years. Mr. Green has lived at Portage since October, 1894. He was a coal miner for 20 years. In April, 1883, Mr. Green was married to Miss Ida M. Border, the daughter of John and Martha (Ripple) Border, both deceased. To this union six children were born: One child died in infancy; Emily, married Hugh Oxford, has a son Hugho, Jr., lives at Duquesne, Pa.; Harry M., lives at Portage, married Elizabeth McCann, of Lilly, and they have the following children: Roy, Mabel, Thelma, Carl, Nellie, Ruth, Patrick and John; Edwin F., a World war veteran, lives at Portage, married Florence Goughnour of South Fork, and they have two daughters, Phyllis and Florence Sibyl; Reba, married Roy Engle, lives at Dunningsville, Pa., and has the |
