are two grandchildren: Helen Louise Seigh and William Campbell McVicker.
    In politics Mr. McVicker is identified with the Republican party. He holds membership in the Methodist Church and the Independent Order of Odd Fellows. Both he and his family are favorably known in the community and have many friends.




    George W. Smith is a progressive and well known business man of Johnstown, where he is proprietor of the George W. Smith Machine Shop. He was born in Richland Township, Cambria County, June 3, 1873, and is the son of Samuel J. and Mary (Horner) Smith.
    Samuel J. Smith, deceased, was a Civil war veteran. He was born in Bradford, Yorkshire, England, Nov. 14, 1837, the son of Joseph and Hanna (Jewett) Smith. Samuel J. Smith was 10 years of age when his parents brought him to the United States. After completing his schooling, he learned the carpenter trade, which he followed successfully his entire life. He served during the Civil war with Company H, Pennsylvania Cavalry, and was a member of the Grand Army of the Republic. Mr. Smith was a Republican and a member of the Progressive Brethren Church. He died in 1911. His widow, a native of Cambria County, lives in Johnstown. By an early marriage, Samuel J. Smith had a son, Frank S., a building contractor in Johnstown. To Samuel J. and Mary (Horner) Smith the following children were born: Amanda, died in infancy; George W., the subject of this sketch; C. J., deceased.
    George W. Smith received his education at Franklin, Pa., and when a boy learned the carpenter trade with his father. He later entered the employ of the Lorain Steel Company, where he learned the machinist's trade, and with whom he remained for seven years. He worked for the Cambria Steel Company for three years, with the S. S. Dunmyer Company for seven years, and in 1910 he engaged in business for himself at 820 Wood Street, where his plant is now located. Mr. Smith conducts one of the most up-to-date machine shops in the city and has an extensive business.
    In 1895 Mr. Smith was united in marriage with Miss Jennie Pergman, of Cambria County. They have three children: Erma, married Dewey Dearmey, lives in Johnstown; Lillian, married Charles Rasbaugh, an elec-
