he conducted a general merchandise business of his own at Tunnelhill. In 1895 he was appointed postmaster of Galliztin, and served in that capacity for four years. He was then employed by R. C. Edelblut, wholesale liquor dealer, Gallitzin. In 1902 Mr. Kinney removed to South Fork, where for the next ten years he engaged in the wholesale liquor business. He retired from active business in 1911. Mr. Kinney was appointed postmaster of South Fork in 1914 and served continuously until 1923. Leslie R. Davies is a veteran of the World War and a representative young business man of South Fork, where he is engaged in the drug business. He was born at Hastings, Pa., Jan. 7, 1893, and is the son of Richard and Catherine (Jones) Davies. Richard Davies, deceased, was born in Wales. When a young man he emigrated to this country and settled at Brisbane, in Clearfield County, Pa., where he engaged in the general mercantile business for many years. He spent the last 20 years of his life at Ebensburg, where his widow resides. She was also born in Wales. To Mr. and Mrs. Davies the following children were born: Mary Ann, married D. A. Thomas; Lulu, married Morgan Evans, an attorney at Ebensburg; Leslie R., the subject of this sketch; Evelyn, married Harry Davis; Catherine, married Thomas Sutter; and Frances, at home. Leslie R. Davies received his education in the public schools of Ebensburg and in 1916 received his degree from the University of Pittsburgh. During the World War he enlisted and served with the Medical Corps at Fort Oglethorpe, Georgia. He was discharged with the rank of sergeant. Mr. Davies began his business career in the drug store of Harry Wertz, Johnstown, and in 1921 took over his present drug business at South Fork, which had been owned and operated by M. Mandelstein, who met his death while in service during the World War. Mr. Davies has an up-to-date store and carries a high grade line of drugs and sundries. He has a large prescription business. On Jan. 7, 1922, Mr. Davies was united in marriage with Miss Marian Jane Sharpless, the daughter of C. E. and Martha (Hunter) Sharpless. |
