730 HISTORY OF CAMBRIA COUNTY

    On Oct. 16, 1922, Mr. Burke was married to Miss Jane Campbell, the daughter of Joseph and Mary (Supple) Campbell. Mr. Campbell was born in Scotland and resides at Portage. His wife, a native of Pennsylvania, is deceased. Mr. and Mrs. Burke have a son, Donald Michael, born Jan. 13, 1924.
    Mr. Burke is a member of St. Michael's Catholic Church.
    The officers of St. Michael Athletic Association are: J. L. Lewis, president; J. E. Fawcett, vice president; J. Ward Hile, treasurer and secretary; Dr. E. P. Dickinson, club surgeon; F. J. Burke, manager, and Joe Mattis, assistant manager.




    Peter Shank, retired, is among the honored and well known pioneer citizens of Cambria County. He lives at Salix. Mr. Shank was born at this place Nov. 6, 1847, and is the son of Samuel and Susanna (Miller) Shank.
    Samuel Shank, deceased, was born on the old Shank homestead near Salix, the son of William Shank, an early farmer of this section. Samuel Shank was also engaged in general farming and stock raising and served as school director and supervisor. Mr. Shank died July 9, 1911, at the age of 70 years. His widow lives at Salix. She was born at Westmont, the Miller homestead being the site of the present Johnstown Country Club. Two sons were born to Mr. and Mrs. Shank: Peter, the subject of this sketch, and one died in infancy.
    Peter Shank spent his boyhood at Salix and remained on his father's farm until he was 18 years of age. He spent four years in the employ of the Cambria Iron Company, Johnstown, after which he engaged in the general mercantile business at Salix. Mr. Shank successfully conducted this business until 1913, when he retired and sold out to J. W. Wright & Son.
    On June 7, 1896, Mr. Shank was married to Miss Emma Stull, the daughter of Jacob R. and Lavina (Wendall) Stull. Mr. Stull, deceased, was for many years a prominent citizen of Salix, having served as justice of the peace and county commissioner. Four children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Shank; Mabel, married Newton Hostetler, lives at Scalp Level, Pa., has two sons, Donand and Dean; Florence, married D. C. Luther, lives at Salix, has a son, William; Robert, deceased; and Lloyd, attends Salix High School.
