at Beaverdale since 1921, and is one of the well known and capable prescription specialists in this section.
    On June 16, 1917, Mr. Crawford was married to Miss Elsie R. Carson, the daughter of James and Ethel (Townsend) Carson, residents of Perryopolis, Pa. Mr. and Mrs. Crawford have four children: Shirley Ann, Betty Jane, James Barclay, and Helen Frances.
    Mr. Crawford is a Republican, a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church, Masonic and Moose loges, and Kappa Psi fraternity.




    Martin Samuel Bentz, county superintendent of schools, is a representative and highly esteemed citizen of Cambria County. He was born at Carlisle, Pa., Jan. 11, 1874, and is the son of Martin C. and Sarah (Swaggart) Bentz.
    Martin C. Bentz, deceased, was a native of Ephreta, Lancaster County, Pa. He was a veteran of the Civil War and served as a member of Company A, 209th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry. He engaged in the mercantile business previous to his death, which occurred in 1873, before the birth of his son, Martin Samuel, the subject of this sketch. His wife died in 1880 and they are buried in Ashland Cemetery, Carlisle, Pa. Two children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Bentz: Grace May, born in 1869; and Martin Samuel.
    Martin Samuel Bentz attended the public schools of Carlisle, Central Pennsylvania College and Albright College. He took post graduate work at Yale University and St. Francis College, from which he received his degree as Doctor of Philosophy. Before attending college, Mr. Bentz worked as a printer on the Carlisle Sentinel for three years and on the Philadelphia Press for two years. After completing his college work he began teaching school at South Fork, where he remained for 14 years as a teacher in the grammar school, high school, and later as supervising principal. He then taught for eight years in the teachers' normal school at Elton and South Fork. He also taught two summers at Slippery Rock Normal School and has been county superintendent since 1911.
    On June 13, 1894, Mr. Bentz was married to Miss Elsie Dinsmore Potts, who was born at New Berlin, Pa., the daughter of Ephriam and Hanna (Sholley) Potts, natives of Union County, Pa. Mr. Potts died in 1902 and his wife died in 1914. To Mr. and Mrs. Bentz were born two sons: Horace Francis, assistant chief clerk, Bethlehem Steel Company,
