Henry Franklin Dorr spent his boyhood at Indiana, Pa., and attended the public schools. He attended Indiana State Normal School and began his business career as an engineer's assistant with John R. Caldwell of Indiana, who at that time was county surveyor of Indiana County, Pa. He later served in this capacity under Robert M. Mullen, who had purchased the business from Mr. Caldwell. In the summer and fall of 1900 he worked as rodman on the U.S.G.S. Survey, after which he worked as an engineer for the Buffalo, Rochester & Pittsburgh Coal Company, putting in the plant at Earnest Island, Luzern. Mr. Dorr was later connected with the Penn Mary Coal Company at Heilwood, Pa., as engineer on the construction of the Heilwood plant. This operation was owned by Mrs. J. H. Weaver of Philadelphia and B. Dawson Coleman of Lebanon, Pa. Mr. Dorr remained in the employ of the above named Weaver & Coleman interests until 1918, and in the meantime under C. E. Sharpless, chief engineer, now living in Ebensburg, he assisted in laying out and building the following coal mines, town, etc.: Idamar Indiana County Hines Coal Mines at Stanford; Nanty Glo Coal Mines at Nanty Glo; Colver Mine at Colver, Pa.; and Revloe Shaft & Town at Revloe, Pa.
Mr. Dorr opened an office for general engineering in Ebensburg in September, 1918, and has an extensive business. He was chosen engineer of Cambria County by Messrs. J. Stanton Davis, Harry B. Heffley, and Mr. Baumgardner, then acting commissioner of Cambria County. Mr. Dorr was the first engineer employed by the county and had charge of the building of about 200 miles of improved highway. He was chosen engineer of the borough of Nanty Glo upon its incorporation and served in that capacity until Dec. 19, 1919, at which time he entered into the duties of county engineer of Cambria County.
On Sept. 25, 1907, Mr. Dorr was united in marriage with Miss Loulla Gertrude Phillips, of Jeffry's, P. O., Clearfield County, Pa., the daughter of Daniel E. and Bertha Chase (Williams) Phillips. Mr. Phillips died March 25, 1913, and his widow lives at Syracuse, N. Y. Mr. and Mrs. Dorr have a daughter, Alice Marie Mayer Dorr, born in 1917.
Mr. Dorr is a Republican. He served as county engineer of Cambria County from Dec. 19, 1919, until Jan. 7, 1924, also secretary of the Cambria County Fair Association, an institution made possible by Mr. Charles M. Schwab, who is chairman of the board of directors. He is a member of the Zion Lutheran Church, Johnstown, and is affiliated with the Masonic Lodge, Cambria No. 278, Williamsport Consistory, Jaffa Shrine, Altoona, Pa., and the Elks Lodge of Johnstown.
