A. M. Shoemaker received his early education in Ebensburg, after which he was graduated from St. Vincent's College, Westmoreland County, Pa., and the Law School of the University of Pennsylvania. He has since engaged in the practice of law at Ebensburg and has met with marked success. Thomas A. Owens is a veteran of the World war and a successful young business man of Patton, where he is engaged in the printing and publishing business. He was born at Carrolltown, Cambria County, Jan. 13, 1894, and is the son of John W. and Margaret (Fongheiser) Owens. John W. Owens was born near Bradley Junction, Pa., and his wife was born near Hollidaysburg, Pa. He was a miller by trade and until his retirement about 15 years ago engaged in the same business, being owner and proprietor of the Carrolltown Flouring Mill. He died Dec. 18, 1923, and is buried in St. Benedict's Cemetery, Carrolltown. His widow lives at Carrolltown. Thomas A., the subject of this sketch, is their only child. Thomas A. Owens grew up at Carrolltown and attended the public schools. At an early age he learned the printer's trade in the office of the Carrolltown News, entering the employ of that paper in 19078. He continued there until 1918, at which time he volunteered for service in the World war. He served in the Machine Gun Training Center, Camp Hancock, Ga., and was discharged in 1919. He then accepted the position as foreman on the Ebensburg Mountaineer-Herald, and was later editor and business manager of the Portage Dispatch and South Fork Record. In January, 1920, he became associated with the Patton Courier in partnership with W. A. Dinsmore.
