Dr. John Murphy was reared by his grandparents. He attended St. Francis College at Loretto, and later the Hahnemann Medical College, Chicago, from which he was graduated in 1878. He immediately began the practice of medicine at Gallitzin, Cambria County, where he remained for three years. He then removed to Loretto, where in 1903 he opened a drug store in connection with his medical practice. He is no longer engaged in business, but still practices his profession and is widely known throughout the community, where he has spent his entire life.
    In 1879 Doctor Murphy was united in marriage with Miss Anna Selbitz, of Gallitzin, the daughter of Charles and Catherine (Johnson) Selbitz, both deceased. To Doctor and Mrs. Murphy were born three daughters: Marie, married Dr. Harry Eckley, lives at Cresson, Pa.; Margaret, deceased; and Nellie, married Thad Reece, lives at Johnstown.
    In politics Doctor Murphy is identified with the Republican party and he is a member of the Catholic Church. He is a citizen whose life has meant much to his community.




    Michael B. Buck, of Carrolltown, is one of the leading and dependable business men of Cambria County. He was born in Carrolltown, Nov. 9, 1887, and is the son of Francis A. and Martha (Parrish) Buck.
    Francis A. Buck was born near Loretto, in Cambria County, Aug. 4, 1842, and is the son of Joseph and Elizabeth (Eckenrode) Buck. Joseph Buck, deceased, was born in Westmoreland County, Pa., in 1797, and died July 31, 1871. He was a member of one of the earliest families that settled in Pennsylvania, having emigrated to this country from Germany in 1785. To Joseph and Elizabeth (Eckenrode) Buck the following children were born: Christine, born Oct. 15, 1820, died Jan. 13, 1823; Henry, born Aug. 17, 1822, died Feb. 13, 1849; John B., born Dec. 11, 1823; Christian, born Sept. 25, 1825, died June 25, 1848; Sarah Ann, born Sept. 22, 1827, deceased; William, born Sept. 23, 1834, deceased; Mary Ann, born Jan. 6, 1836, died Jan. 1, 1837; Charles, born Jan. 23, 1839, died Oct. 3, 1856; and Francis, father of the subject of this sketch.
    Francis A. Buck spent his boyhood on the farm and when a young man operated a saw and grist mill. He later became extensively interested in the lumber business at Carrolltown, where he was actively engaged until the last few years. The business is now conducted by his son, Michael B.
