of Altoona High School and Combes Conservatory of Music, Philadelphia. Before her marriage she taught school in Cambria County. W. M. Reed, proprietor of Reed's Dollar Store at Nanty Glo, is widely known throughout Cambria County as a successful young business man. He was born at Pittsburgh, July 10, 1902, and is the son of G. M. and Mabel (Wagner) Reed. G. M. Reed was born at Greensburg, Westmoreland County, Pa. When a young man he entered the employ of the Pennsylvania Railroad as a fireman and later was promoted to passenger engineer between Altoona and Pittsburgh. He remained in the employ of this company for 18 years, after which he established Reed's Dollar Store at South Fork, which he still conducts and which is one of the leading business houses of that section. Mr. Reed resides on a farm on the Ebensburg Pike. He is also extensively engaged in the real estate business at South Fork. He is a Republican and a member of the Methodist Church. Mr. and Mrs. Reed have five children: W. M., the subject of this sketch; Anne, a music teacher, lives at Cleveland, Ohio; Alyce, a music teacher, lives at home; Wayne and Waldo, both students. W. M. Reed received his early education in the public schools of South Fork and after his graduation from high school in 1916 entered Carnegie Institute of Technology. After completing his schooling he was connected with the Westinghouse Company as a draftsman, and was later appointed assistant consulting engineer in New England. In 1923 he returned to South Fork and engaged in business with his father. Later in that year they established Reed's Dollar Store at Nanty Glo, and in January, 1926, Mr. Reed purchased his father's interest in the Nanty Glo store. On Feb. 5, 1922, Mr. Reed was married to Miss Carrie Powell, the daughter of D. W. and Jane (Wilkinson) Powell, natives of Cambria County. Mr. Powell, who lives retired at Ebensburg, was a leading farmer and stockman of this section for many years. Mr. and Mrs. Reed have two daughters, Audrey and Mayme. |
