   Mr. Reed is a Republican, a member of the Methodist Church, Independent Order of Odd Fellows, and Nanty Glo Business Men's Association. He is interested in athletics and at the Cambria County Firemen's Convention won the 200-yard dash for the local fire department. Martin L. Cuppels, Jr., is a prominent and successful business man of Cresson, where he is president of the M. L. Cuppels Lumber Company. He was born in Clearfield County, Pa., Feb. 10, 1878, and is the son of M. L. and Mary Jane (Cox) Cuppels. M. L. Cuppels, who lives retired at Cresson, is a veteran of the Civil war. He was born near Lewiston, in Mifflin County, Pa., May 15, 1848, and is the son of James and Anna (Russels) Cuppels. James Cuppels was a native of Pennsylvania and a prosperous farmer during his life. His wife was a native of Maine. They are both deceased. Mr. and Mrs. Cuppels had 16 children, two of whom are living: M. L. and Ella Norton. M. L. Cuppels, Sr., was 14 years of age when he enlisted in the army. He was taken home by his father, but in 1864 again enlisted in Company E, Twentieth Regiment. He was taken prisoner on three occasions but successfully made his escape each time. Upon his return home, Mr. Cuppels learned the carpenter trade and engaged in general contracting work at Brisbane, Pa. In 1915 he removed to Cresson and has lived retired since 1920. For 29 years Mr. Cuppels engaged in farming in Cambria County, Pa. In 1870 he was married to Miss Mary Jane Cox, a native of Clearfield County, who died in 1920. To this union 13 children were born. Mr. Cuppels is a Democrat and has held several township offices, such as township collector and supervisor. He is a member of the Catholic Church and a highly esteemed member of the community. M. L. Cuppels, Jr., spent his boyhood in Clearfield County, Pa., and at an early age came to Cambria County. He studied bookkeeping and later became interested in construction engineering and bridge building, which he followed until 1919. He then located at Cresson and engaged in the lumber business on a large scale. He handles all kinds of lumber and building supplies and carries on a business within a radius of 100 miles of Cresson, maintaining an efficient delivery service. Mr. Cuppels married Miss Anna Kerr, of Key West, Fla., who is deceased. To them one daughter, Henel, was born. Mr. Cuppels later married Miss Lena Miller, of Altoona, Pa. |
