William H. Sandford, deceased, ranked among the best known business men and representative citizens of Cambria County. At the time of his death, Dec. 24, 1925, he was president of the First National Bank of Patton. He was born in England in 1851, the son of Charles B. and Mary (Connelly) Sandford.
When a small child William H. Sandford came to this country with his parents and lived at Clearfield, Pa., and later at Philipsburg, where Charles B. Sandford became an educator of note. At the age of 15 years William H. Sandford secured employment in a bank at Philipsburg, and all of his life was actively engaged in banking. He came to Patton in 1893 and was cashier of the First National Bank when he first opened its doors to the public. In 1905 he became president of that institution and served in that capacity until his death.
Mr. Sandford was interested in a number of business enterprises aside from his bank interest. He was a director of the Cosgrove Meehan Coal Company of Johnstown and Illinois. Mr. Sandford had always the interest of Patton at heart. Any move toward its progress had his sanction and support. A speaker of no mean repute, he was called upon frequently to give public addresses, especially during the World War.
Mr. Sandford's long residence in Patton was filled with various local posts of duty. He was the first treasurer of Patton Borough and also served as a member of the school board. He was a wise counsellor and willing to talk with all who came to him.
Vitally interested in church affairs and a pioneer of the Patton Methodist Episcopal Church, Mr. Sandford let both in business and in private the life of an upright Christian gentleman. He was sincere in every undertaking. If he engaged in any nature of work, he did so after weighing its possibilities carefully, and if meritorious, he gave it his whole hearted support. This held good in business, in church and in civic matters.
Mr. Sandford was a member of the Masonic Lodge, F. & A. M. No. 658, Williamsport Consistory and Jaffa Temple. He was widely known throughout the community and beloved by all.
