P. Dewees, deceased; Lilly, deceased, was the wife of L. L. Kelly, physician, Still Pond, Md.; Mary, the widow of J. Herman Ireland, lives at Roland Park, Baltimore; H. Clay, deceased; and Woodland, the subject of this sketch.
    Woodland Deringer was educated in the public schools of Philadelphia and attended Blairstown's Academy, and Georgetown University, Washington, D. C. In 1886 he went to Phillipsburg, Pa., where he entered the employ of William P. Duncan as a bookkeeper. This coal business was later sold to Gen. George J. Magee, and Mr. Deringer remained in the latter's employ until 1893, when he became identified with the Delta Coal Mining Company of Philadelphia and Spangler. In December, 1895, he came to Spangler, where he purchased Woodland Mine No. 1, with his brother, H. C. Deringer. Later they opened up Woodland Mine No. 2, located at Garmontown. In 1917 Woodland Mine No. 4 was opened and in 1919 Woodland Mine No. 5. These mines are all in constant operation and cover approximately 1, 500 acres of land. Mr. Deringer is president of the Landwood Coal Company and a director of the First National Bank of Spangler.
    In 1888 Mr. Deringer was married to Miss Florence Hurtt, the daughter of James W. and Mary E. (Woodland) Hurtt, natives of Maryland, and both now deceased. To Mr. and Mrs. Deringer five children were born, as follows: B. W., married Margaret Aldrich, lives at Spangler, and they have two children, B. W., Jr., and Margaret; J. W. married Elizabeth Wille, now deceased, and they had one child, Florence; D. M., married Elizabeth Baker, lives at Westfield, N. J., and they have one child, D. M., Jr.; Clifton H., married Josephine Dinsmore, lives at Punxsutawney, Pa., and they have one child, Josephine; and Albert Sidney, lives at home, is western representative for Hoover & Smith, jewelers, of Philadelphia. D. M. Deringer is a veteran of the World War, having served in France as a sergeant for 19 months.
    Mr. Deringer is a Democrat and is past president of the Spangler Boro Council. He is a member of the Episcopal Church, Chetremon County Club, and is affiliated with Patton F. & A. M. No. 658, past worshipful master; Mountain Chapter, R. A. M., No. 89, Altoona; Mountain Council, R. & S. M. M., No. 9, Altoona; Mountain Commandery, Knight Templar, No. 10, Altoona; Williamsport consistory, 32nd degree; Jaffa Temple and Shrine Club, Altoona; and Acacia Club, Williamsport.
