Glo; Thomas J., deceased, was the husband of Izora Kerr, who lives at Nanty Glo; Samuel, connected with the firm of Davis Bros. Lumber Company; one child died in infancy; Epsy, married Charles Deibler, lives at Nanty Glo; and William Grant, the subject of this sketch.
William Grant Davis received his education in the public schools of East Conemaugh and for several years engaged in farming. In 1912 he came to Nanty Glo and after spending two years in the mines became affiliated with the Mountain Mercantile Company. He was later associated with A. A. Dietrich, hardware merchant, of Nanty Glo. In 1920 Mr. Davis established the Davis Bros. Lumber Company, in partnership with his brother, and they rank among the leading retail lumber dealers of Cambria County. They are also proprietors of the Davis Music Company, dealers in musical instruments and radios.
In 1911 Mr. Davis was united in marriage with Miss Ida May Carney, the daughter of Al and Harriet (Rager) Carney, natives of Pennsylvania, and residents of Ebensburg. To Mr. and Mrs. Davis have been born four children: Ida Gwendolyn, born March 10, 1912; William Allen, born Nov. 23, 1913; Marion Ruth, born Dec. 12, 1917; and Harriet Jane, born Dec. 12, 1919.
Mr. Davis is a Republican and for the past three years has served as president of the local school board. He is a member of the Church of the Brethren and is identified with the Retail Lumber Dealers Association and Nanty Glo Business Men's Association. He and his family are among the substantial and highly respected citizens of Cambria County.
Woodland Deringer is among the prominent and influential citizens of Spangler, where he is identified with the Deringer Fuel Company. He was born in new Castle County, Delaware, Dec. 18, 1864, and is a son of B. W. and Estalena (Woodland) Deringer.
B. W. Deringer, deceased, was a native of Philadelphia, and the son of Henry Deringer, founder of the Deringer Pistol Company, manufacturers of bayonets, pistols, and other arms and ammunitions during the Civil War. The plant was later operated by I. Jones Clark. B. W. Deringer was associated in business with his father. He died in 1868 and is buried in Philadelphia. His widow died June 10, 1903.
