E. A. Shanley received his education in the public schools of Lorimer, Pa., and St. Vincent's College. For a short time he was interested in the candy making business at Greensburg, Pa., after which he worked in the mines for three years with his brother as assistant mine foreman. He then worked for the Jamison Coal Company at Alexandria, and later went to Atlantic, Pa., as manager of a store for the Atlantic Supply Company, Mine No. 2. From there he went to Cairnbrook, Pa., as manager of the Equitable Supply Company, and three years later removed to Marianna, Pa., where he served as manager of the stores of the Bethlehem Steel Company. In 1924 Mr. Shanley came to Nanty Glo and assumed management of the Mountain Mercantile Company.
In 1922 Mr. Shanley was united in marriage with Miss Louella Zewe, the daughter of Adam and Margaret (Doney) Zewe, natives of Germany and early settlers of Duquesne, Pa. Mr. Zewe was president of the Monogahela Brewing Company. He died in 1905 and is buried at Monongahela City, Pa. His widow resides at that place. Mr. and Mrs. Shanley have a daughter, Barbara Jane, born March 3, 1923.
Politically Mr. Shanley is a Democrat. He is a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus, Ebensburg, Loyal Order of Moose, Cairnbrook, and Nanty Glo Business Men's Association. He is one of the enterprising men of the community.
William Grant Davis, general manager of the Davis Brothers Lumber Company, is a progressive business man of Nanty Glo. He was born at Horatio, Pa., July 17, 1890, and is the son of Thomas T. and Sarah Jane (Minds) Davis.
Thomas T. Davis was born in Wales, Sept. 21, 1851, and was 15 years of age when his parents came to this country and settled at Mahanoy City, Pa., where he worked in the mines. He later engaged in general farming and stock raising and owned a well improved farm of 60 acres at Mundy's Corners, Cambria County. He now lives retired at Nanty Glo. Mr. Davis is known throughout this section as an accomplished singer and is a member of the choir of the Church of the Brethren. He is a Republican. His wife is a native of Pennsylvania. To Mr. and Mrs. Davis 12 children were born as follows: Hepzibah, deceased; Ida, married Victor Pearson, lives at Nanty Glo; Anna, married Robert Wiseman, lives at Ramey, Pa.; three children died in infancy; Emma, married Frank Gamber, lives at Nanty
