830 HISTORY OF CAMBRIA COUNTY

    Bernard Gross. Ranking among the most successful and progressive business men of Cambria County, is Bernard Gross, who owns one of the finest and largest department stores between Johnstown and Altoona, Pa. He was born in 1876 in Hungary, and at the age of 14 years emigrated to the United States and settled at Altoona, Pa. He then engaged in the mercantile business for about five years in Cassandra, the business being known as A. Hendler Son & Company.
    In 1905 Mr. Gross came to Cresson and established his present business. He has met with marked success and is widely known throughout the county as a reliable merchant. He is also treasurer of the Sunlight Baking Company, and is identified with the Cresson Manufacturing Company, manufacturers of wooden novelties. He is a director of the First National Bank of Cresson.
    Mr. Gross married Miss Anna Hendler, of Altoona, Pa., and they have five children, as follows: Ella, a graduate of Mt. Aloysius Academy, Cresson, and Darlington Seminary, West Chester, Pa., is in charge of the women's department of her father's business; Jacob was graduated from the University of Pennsylvania in 1923, is assistant manager of the store; Dorothy, a graduate of Highland Manor, Tarrytown, N.Y.; Mollie and Sarah, both at home.
    Mr. Gross is a member of the Rotary Club of Cresson and has served on the city council for eight years.




    Frank J. Cuppels, of Cresson is one of the enterprising and successful young business men of Cambria County. He was born in Clearfield Township, Cambria County, Jan. 24, 1891, and is the son of Martin L. and Mary Jane (Cox) Cuppels, a complete sketch of whom appears elsewhere in this history.
    After completing his schooling, F.J. Cuppels learned the carpenter trade. He has lived at Cresson since 1912 and since 1917 has engaged in the construction business. He has been successful in his work and has been identified with most of the building activity in Cresson. Among the buildings which have been under his supervision are: The Farmer's Bank; St. Francis School; addition to St. John's Orphanage; First National Bank; Link's Garage; Church of the Immaculate Conception; St. Joseph's Church, Dubois, Pa.; Citizens Deposit Bank, Gallitzin, Pa.; and the First National Bank, Cassandra, Pa.
