incorporated at $100,000, and which is one of the largest baking businesses in the county. John W. Kearney is a substantial business man of Cresson and a member of Cambria County's oldest families. He was born at Munster, in Cambria County, Set. 13, 1883, and is the son of M.P. and Helen (Bradley) Kearney. M.P. Kearney was born at Munster, Pa., in 1841, the son of John Kearney, who emigrated to this country more than 100 years ago and settled in Cambria County. He was born in Ireland. M.P. Kearney was interested in mining during his active career and since the time of his retirement he has lived at Cresson. He was active in the organization of the United Mine Workers organization in this section of the state and is well known. His wife is also a native of Cambria County. To Mr. and Mrs. Kearney 13 children were born, of whom John W., the subject of this sketch, is the third in order of birth. John W. Kearney attended the public schools of Cambria County and at the age of 16 years entered the mines. After six years he learned the carpenter trade and later lived in Johnstown, where he became interested in automobile work. Mr. Kearney has lived in Cresson since 1918, where he is owner of the William Penn Accessory Company. He is local dealer for the Chevrolet automobile and has a well equipped garage, which is located on the William Penn Highway. On Oct. 7, 1925, Mr. Kearney was united in marriage with Miss Olive McConnell, of Cambria County. She was a teacher in Cambria County schools before her marriage. Mr. Kearney is a Democrat and a member of the Catholic Church and Knights of Columbus. He is well liked in the community in which he has spent his entire life. |
