Milton, lives in Philadelphia, where he is wire chief for the American Telephone and Telegraph Company; Julia, a teacher at Pottsville, Pa., is a graduate of Ebensburg High School and Columbia University, New York City; Oliver, lives at Lilly, Pa., is chief clerk for trainmaster of Cresson Division of the Pennsylvania Railroad at Cresson, Pa.; Mary, a graduate of Ebensburg High School and Columbia University; teaches at West Chester State Normal School; Agnes, physical education instructor at Corry (Pa.) High School, is a graduate of Ebensburg High School, Columbia University, and schools in Boston, Mass., and Connecticut; Harry, lives at Greensburg, Pa.; Margaret, a teacher, lives in Johnstown; Wilbert, employed in the city engineer's office, Los Angeles, Calif.; Donald, lives at Cresson; and Ruth lives in Chicago, Ill., is a graduate of Vassar College.
After completing his schooling in Ebensburg, J. Herman Connell entered the employ of the Pennsylvania Railroad at Ebensburg in 1887. In 1889 he was transferred to Cresson as clerk and in 1895 was transferred Lilly in capacity of agent. In 1907 he was made depot and freight agent of the Pittsburgh Division at Cresson and has since served in that capacity. Mr. Connell has 32 men under his supervision. During the World War Cresson transfer handled practically all of the freight for the west created east of Altoona.
Mr. Connell was married Nov. 22, 1892, to Miss Martha Quartz, of Cresson, the daughter of Michael and Anna (Murphy) Quartz. Mr. Quartz, deceased, was for many years a passenger conductor on the Pennsylvania Railroad on the Pittsburgh Division. He died Sept. 22, 1898, and his widow lives at Cresson. To Mr. and Mrs. Connell the following children were born: Kathryne, died infancy; Helen, married G.M. Lang, engaged in the real estate business at Cresson; Joseph, a graduate of Johnstown High School and the University of Pittsburgh in 1922, lives at Allentown, Pa., where he is identified with the Pennsylvania Light & Power Company. He married Miss Mary Drass of Cresson; Milton, a graduate of Altoona High School and the University of Pittsburgh in 1923, in the employ of the Pennsylvania Railroad as an electrical engineer; Martha, attends West Chester Normal School; Glenn W., will be graduated from the University of Pittsburgh in 1927; Herman Jr., and Frederick, both students in Cresson High School; and Anna Louise, a student.
Mr. Connell is a Republican, a member of the Catholic Church, Elks Lodge, and Knights of Columbus. The Connell family is one of the widely know families of the county and are well liked.
