Gettysburg, where he remained for three years as an instructor in mathematics. He then taught at South Williamsport, Pa., for one year, at Simpson, W. Va., for one year, and at Leighton, Pa., as principal of the high school. During the World war Mr. Ott enlisted in the Fifty-sixth Pioneer Infantry and was sent to Camp Wadsworth, S. C. He served in France and was discharged at Camp Mills in 1919, after having attended school at Beaune, France. Thomas Barnes, deceased, was for many years a dominant figure in connection with financial, business and civic affairs of Barnesboro, of which he was the founder. He was born in Lancashire, England, May 13, 1843, the son of John Barnes, deceased. At an early age Thomas Barnes came to the United States and located at Philipsburg, Pa., where he was employed in the coal mining business until 1872. He then purchased a small tract of land at Powelltown, Pa., where he opened a mine throughout Cambria and Clearfield counties. In 1891 Mr. Barnes founded the town of Barnesboro, to which he removed his family in 1899, where a memorial parish house has recently been completed and donated by Mrs. Barnes to St. Thomas's Episcopal Church. He died Jan. 14, 1911, in Philadelphia, where the main offices of the Barnes Coal Company are located. He was one of the organizers of the Moshannon National Bank of Philipsburg and the president of the First National Bank of Barnesboro for many years. On Aug. 18, 1864, Mr. Barnes was married to Miss Ann Ashcroft, who was born at Ashton-under-Lyne, England, Dec. 24, 1848. She is the daughter of Thomas and Ruth (Spencer) Ashcroft, both deceased.
