children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Barnes, as follows: Jane, the widow of James Johnston, lives at Canandaigua, N.Y.; Margaret, married Abraham A. Post, lives at Geneva, N. Y.; Ruth, married Reuben II. Mull, lives at Philipsburg, Pa.; John, president of the First National Bank of Barnesboro, and head of the Barnes interests; Rachel, lives with her mother at Barnesboro; Ann Esther Ashcrosft, died in 1906, at the age of 21 years. Mr. Barnes was a member of the Episcopal Church of Philipsburg. John G. Nicholson, superintendent of the Pennsylvania Coal & Coke Mine, also known as the Allport property, Barnesboro, is a native of England. He was born in Hebrun, England, July 20, 1875, and is a son of James and Jane (Stevens) Nicholson. James Nicholson came to the United States in 1879 and settled first at Morris Run, Pa., where he followed mining. The family subsequently lived at Philipsburg and later came to Cambria County. A complete sketch of James Nicholson will be found in his son Jonathan R. Nicholson's sketch in this history. J. G. Nicholson attended the schools of Clearfield County until he was 16 years of age, although he had worked part time in the mines from the age of 12 years with his father, who took his sons into the mines and taught them the principles of mining. He worked for four years in the mines at Hastings, then a year in Patton in the old Ryley mine, which was owned by John Ashcroft, and later in the J. L. Mitchell mines at Gallitzin as assistant mine foreman, where he remained about two years. He was then transferred from Mine No. 10 to Nanty Glo, to No. 14, Pennsylvania Coal & Coke Company. Two years later he went to No. 19, which is now finished. After three years he was transferred to Colliery No. 9, with the Penna Coal & Coke Co., Cresson, where for seven years he was mine superintendent. From Cresson he was transferred to Henderson, Ky., to the Keystone Mine Manufacturing Company as superintendent, where he was employed mine months, and returned to Cresson, Feb. 1, 1911, to his present position. Mr. Nicholson was married to Miss Sue Richards, of Hastings, Pa., on May 14, 1900, and to them have been born five children, as follows: Mildred, a graduate of Barnesboro High School Dickinson Seminary, lives at home; Walter, born Feb. 24, 1904, a graduate of Spangler High School, |
