HISTORY OF CAMBRIA COUNTY 865

    John Bush is well known in Barnesboro, where he has successfully engaged in business since 1906. He was born in Poland, Nov. 30, 1864, and is the son of Joseph and Antonia Bush. Mr. Bush is deceased and his widow resides in Poland.
     At the age of 22 years John Bush emigrated to this country and settled at Nanticoke, Pa. He later engaged in business at Mount Pleasant and Claridge, Pa. He has conducted a meat business at Barnesboro continually since 1906 and is one of the reliable merchants of the city.
     On Feb. 15, 1892, Mr. Bush was married to Miss Tillie Marek, born in Poland. They have six children, as follows: Virgil, at home; Antoinette and Stanley, deceased; Charles, at home; Walter, born Sept. 28, 1901, married Aug. 1, 1922, to Miss Della Welsh; and Amelia, at home. .
     Politically Mr. Bush is a Republican and he and his family hold membership in the Catholic Church.




    Francis Ratchford is among the enterprising and well known business men of Barnesboro. He was born at West Nanticoke, Luzerne County, Pa., the son of Michael and Elizabeth E. (Smith) Ratchford.
     Michael Ratchford, deceased, was a native of Ireland. He came to this country when 12 years of age and settled in Pennsylvania, where he died in 1888. He is buried at West Nanticoke, Pa. Mr. Ratchford was engaged in railroad work during his life. He was a member of the Catholic Church. His widow, a native of Plymouth, Pa., lives at West Nanticoke. The following children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Ratchford: George, deceased; Ella, married Emory Watts, lives at Bloomsburg, Pa.; William W., lives at Wilkes Barre, Pa.; Francis, the subject of this sketch; Norman, a graduate of Cornell University, served as county superintendent of agriculture for several years, lives at Westchester, Pa.; and Harry, lives at West Nanticoke, Pa.
     After completing his schooling at West Nanticoke and Kingston Seminary, Francis Ratchford entered the employ of the Pennsylvania Railroad at West Nanticoke. He was later transferred to Pittsburgh, and in 1920 came to Barnesboro and established his present business. Mr. Ratchford conducts a well equipped tire shop and handles a complete line of automobile accessories. He is also proprietor of the Ratchford Filling Station in Barnesboro, and specializes in battery repair work.
