870 HISTORY OF CAMBRIA COUNTY

    A. J. Houck spent his boyhood at Hastings and attended the public schools. For several years he worked for his father in the Hastings Bottling Works and later became associated with H. E. Williams, editor and manager of the North Cambria News, which was published for the first time in May, 1902. Later W. R. Kibler served as editor and manager. In 1911 Mr. Houck became owner and editor of this well known newspaper. Previous to this time he has been connected with newspaper work in Pittsburgh, Johnstown, New York, and West Virginia.
     Mr. Houck was married in 1912 to Miss Alma Arble, of Carrolltown, who died Jan. 26, 1913. On June 24, 1919, he was married to Miss Gertrude Kline, a graduate of Gallitzin High School and Ebensburg Normal School, a daughter of F. L. and Christina (Felding) Kline. Four children have been born to Mr. and Mrs. Houck: Robert, born March 27, 1920; Camille, born Jan. 27, 1922; Patrick, born Sept. 23, 1924; and Margaret Vernon, born April 19, 1926.
     Mr. Houck is a Republican and a member of the Catholic Church and Knights of Columbus.




    Dennis Nolan ranks among the successful and prominent business men of Barnesboro, where he has the agency for the Oakland, Pontiac and Stutz automobiles. He was born at Cascade, Lycoming County, Pa., March 19, 1873, and is the son of Dennis and Mary (Reynolds) Nolan.
     Dennis Nolan, deceased, was a native of Ireland, born in 1835. At an early age he emigrated to the United States and settled in Northumberland County, Pa., where he spent the remainder of his life as a miner. He died in 1917 at Seattle, Wash., and his wife, who was a native of Ireland, is also deceased. To Mr. and Mrs. Nolan ten children were born, of whom Dennis, the subject of this sketch, is the sole survivor.
     Dennis Nolan spent his boyhood at Philipsburg and attended the schools there. He worked in the mines for about 15 years, after which he removed to Patton. In 1906 he became identified with the C. B. C. Coal Company at Spangler, after which he served as master mechanic for the Empire Coal Company. In 1918 Mr. Nolan established his present business at Barnesboro. He has an extensive business throughout the county and operates a high-grade repair shop in connection with his sales agency.
     In 1899 Mr. Nolan was married to Miss Mary Variot, a native of Clearfield County, Pa. They have four children: Marie, married Henry
