872 HISTORY OF CAMBRIA COUNTY

    Hon. Walter Allen Blair, M. D., a physician and surgeon of Spangler, Pa., is well known throughout Cambria County, both as a successful man in his profession and an excellent citizen. He was born at Arnot, Tioga County, Pa., Jan. 8, 1875, son of Walter and Helen (Allen) Blair.
     His parents were natives of Edinburgh, Scotland, and came to this country and located in Tioga County, where Mr. Blair was connected with the coal mining industry until his death, which occurred in 1876. Mrs. Blair died in 1898 and both are buried at Blossburg, Pa. Mr. and Mrs. Blair were both members of the Presbyterian Church. Eight children were born to them, seven sons and one daughter, two of whom are still living, James Blair, M. D., of Newark, N. J., and Walter Allen Blair, of Spangler, Pa., the subject of this sketch.
     Walter Allen Blair attended the public schools of Arnot, Mansfield State Normal School, Pennsylvania State College and Baltimore Medical School, where he prepared for the medical profession. While attending the latter three schools he was a member of both the varsity football and baseball teams.
     In 1903 he was graduated from the medical Chirurigical College of Philadelphia, receiving his degree as Doctor of Medicine, and during the same year was married to Miss Jessie Husted, daughter of James and Mary (Bowen) Husted, natives of Tioga County, and both now deceased.
     To Doctor and Mrs. Blair one daughter, Mary H., was born, Sept. 22, 1905, and who graduated from the Mansfield State Normal School in the class of 1926.
     After completing his medical course Doctor Blair engaged in the practice of his profession at Patton, where he remained from 1903 to 1912, when he removed to Spangler. He was one of the organizers of the Miners Hospital of Northern Cambria and is still a member of its surgical and medical staffs, being one of the chiefs of the above staffs since 1916. He is also a member of the Spangler Board of Health.
     In 1912 Doctor Blair was elected to the State Legislature as a representative from the Second District of Cambria County, and was also a valued member of the Patton School Board for six years, being elected to both offices on the Republican ticket.
     He is identified with the following medical societies: Cambria County Medical Society, Pennsylvania State Medical Association, American Medical Association, W. E. Hoghes Medical Society, James M. Andrews Medical Society and Earnest Laplace Surgical Society.
