In fraternal and community activities, Doctor Blair is also well known, holding membership in the Presbyterian Church, Spangler, Chamber of Commerce, Chetremon County Club, Patton Lodge No. 658, F. & A. M., Williamsport Consistory and Phi Sigma Kappa fraternity. M. L. Buck, cashier of the Hastings Bank, is a member of a prominent pioneer family of Cambria County. He was born at Carrolltown, April 16, 1874, and is a son of John and Regina (Sherry) Buck. John Buck was born in Carroll Township, Cambria County, Dec. 11, 1822, the son of Joseph Buck, whose father emigrated from Germany and settled in Pennsylvania. Joseph Buck was born in Bucks County, Pa., Nov. 16, 1797. His son, John, was reared and educated at Carrolltown, where he built the grist mills known at that time as Bucks Mills. He engaged in the milling business until 1860, when he was elected sheriff of the county. At the end of his term as sheriff he moved to Carrolltown and engaged in the mercantile business. He served as postmaster and in 1875 was elected to the State Legislature. He continued his mercantile business until the early nineties, when he retired. Mr. Buck died in 1916 and is buried at Carrolltown. His wife, a native of Germany, died in 1915. To Mr. and Mrs. Buck the following children were born: Celestine A., of Carrolltown; Dr. Michael J., a physician, Pittsburgh; Sylvester H., Elyria, Ohio; Peter M., who died in 1881; James P., of Chicago; Anicetus William, of Ebensburg; Mary O., married James V. Scanlan, of Ebensburg; Ambrose C., of Braddock, Pa.; Edward J., of Denver, Colo.; Anna M., married James B. Eek, of Big Bend, Pa.; Vincent J., of Turtle Creek, Pa.; and M. L., the subject of this sketch. M. L. Buck spent his boyhood at Carrolltown and attended the schools there. He was graduated from Loyola College, Baltimore, Md., after which he engaged in the hardware business at Braddock, Pa., for three years. He then spent one year in the Carrolltown Bank, and in 1899 became identified with the Hastings Bank as cashier, in which capacity he has since served. He is one of the bank's largest stockholders. On June 15, 1904, Mr. Buck was united in marriage with Miss Ella May Eckenrode of Carrolltown, Pa., the daughter of Andrew and Mary M. (Sherry) Eckenrode.
