daughter of Robert Kells, and their children were: Frank U., the subject of this sketch; Charles D., born in 1866, married Nora Hazlet of Jacksonville, Indiana County; Mary S., born in 1869; Jennie, born in 1873, wife of Thomas Dockerty; George C., born in 1875, married Effice Fritz; Rebecca, born in 1879, married Ray Torrence, San Francisco, Cal.; and James T., born Oct. 10, 1883. The death of Mr. Ferguson, which was sudden, occurred May 22, 1895. His widow, who is a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church, resides at Blairsville.
    Dr. Frank U. Ferguson was reared on the homestead, receiving his education in the public schools and at Blairsville Academy. He then became a clerk in a drug store of Milton C. Kerr of Blairsville, and later served in the same capacity in the store of Hedrick Brothers, of India, remaining with them until 1884, in which year he opened a drug store at Gallitzin. In 1889 he passed the State Board of Pharmacy. In 1887 he entered the Medical Chirurgical College of Philadelphia, and in 1890 graduated as president of his class. Returning to Gallitzin he formed a partnership with Dr. E.T. Bradley, which was maintained until 1892, since which time he has practiced alone. Doctor Ferguson devotes much attention to surgical work and is regarded as one of the foremost surgeons in this part of the state. He has also contributed to medical journals. He had the first recorded operation for entopic pregnancy, which was successful; this was done in 1900. He was the first to use, also to advocate, in a paper before the Cambria County Medical Society, anti-toxin for diphtheria. He has been connected with the Board of Health since its organization in 1902. In 1895 he returned to Philadelphia and took a polyclinic course. He is a close student and has one of the finest libraries in the county. He is a member of the Pennsylvania State Medical Society, Cambria County Medical Society, of which he served as president in 1896, and American Medical Association. Doctor Ferguson is also president of the Citizens Deposit Bank of Gallitzin, having served in that capacity since the organization of the bank.
    On June 28, 1887, Doctor Ferguson was married to Miss Margaret Bradley, of Gallitzin, the daughter of Thomas and Catherine (King) Bradley, both deceased. To them were born three children: Paul H., married Miss Nina Price, lives at Gallitzin; Arthur A., married Geneva Hart, lives at Sonman, Pa.; and Pearl, died at the age of 16 years.
    In politics Doctor Ferguson is identified with the Republican party and he has served as a member of the local school board for more than 20
