years, During the World War he served as a member of No. 3 District Draft Board of Cambria County. He is a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus, and Loyal Order of Moose. As a physician and citizen, Doctor Ferguson has always ranked high in the community. John E. Burns, owner of Burns General Store, and vice president of The Citizens Deposit Bank of Gallitzin, is a prominent business man of Cambria County. He was born in Gallitzin, Oct. 12, 1973, a son of Patrick and Ann (McGovern) Burns. Patrick Burns and his wife were natives of Ireland. They were married in the United States and were among the early settlers of Gallitzin, where Mr. Burns was employed by the Pennsylvania Railroad Company. He worked in this capacity for the Pennsylvania Railroad Company for over 40 years and was killed by an engine in March, 1889. His widow died in 1923 at the age of 87 years, and they are both buried in St. Patrick's Cemetery, Gallitzin. Six children were born to them: Julia, married Thomas Brannon, deceased, and she lives in Gallitzin; Jennie C., lives in Gallitzin; Mary F., lives in Philadelphia; Thomas F., car inspector foreman for the Pennsylvania Railroad; On April 10, 1926, he had served 47 years with this company and resides in Gallitzin; Francis P., died at the age of 22 years, buried in St. Patrick's Cemetery, Gallitzin; and John E., the subject of this sketch. John E. Burns was reared at Gallitzin and attended the Gallitzin school. At the age of 15 years he learned the printer's trade which he followed for nine years, eight years in Gallitzin and one in Philadelphia. He then became interested in mercantile pursuits, was a clerk in Joseph Bengele's store in Gallitzin for nearly 16 years, serving as manager the past 10 years. In 1912 he established his present store, which is located in his own building, at Hemlock and Convent streets. He carries a very complete stock of general merchandise, groceries, etc., and has an extensive trade over a large scope of territory. Mr. Burns has served as treasurer of the Building & Loan Company for the last 17 years and as a member of the school board for 18 years. He is a Democrat and a member of St. Patrick's Church. He is a man well known for his ability in business, and for his high ideals of civic progress. |
