Mr. Conrad is a Democrat and is a member of St. Patrick's Church. He enlisted for service during the World War and went overseas with Company D, 109th Infantry, and served 11 months. He was wounded in battle near Firmes, and was in the hospital over a month. Mr. Conrad and his three brothers were in service: J. R. in the 56th Pioneer Infantry, served nearly a year overseas; C. R. was stationed at Camp Lee, and G. J. served 18 months with the 305th Engineers. Paul S. Conrad was the only one of the brothers who was wounded. The readiness of the Conrad brothers to offer their services when they were needed shows the caliber of the men. W. E. Meyers, an enterprising business man of Gallitzin, who is engaged in the garage and automobile repair business, is a native of Cambria County. He was born in Kernville, a suburb of Johnstown, Dec. 29, 1873, and is a son of F.C. and Jennie (Nelson) Meyers. F. C. Meyers was born Feb. 28, 1849, near Pittsburgh, Pa. During his early manhood he was engaged in farming, after which he came to Johnstown and worked for the Cambria Steel Company until 1899. In that year he removed to Chestnut Ridge, Bedford County, Pa., and bought a farm which he operated until 1919, when he sold his farm and moved to Flintstone, Md., where a daughter resides. Mrs. Meyers was born in Blair County, Pa., in 1856. To Mr. and Mrs. Meyers three children were born, all living. W. E. Meyers was reared and received his education in Johnstown. He worked for the Cambria Steel Company, doing electrical work for one year, after which he was employed by the Johnstown Steel Company in the same line of work for nine years. In 1901 he came to Gallitzin and worked for Mr. Nelson in his hardware store until Jan. 3, 1920, as a plumber and tinner. On the latter date Mr. Meyers opened his present garage business in a shop which he owns at 412 Short Street. He also does plumbing, heating, tinning, and automobile repairing. Mr. Meyers is an expert mechanic in these lines and thoroughly master of his business. He has built up a large trade and is one of the dependable men of his community. W. E. Meyers was married April 23, 1896, at Johnstown, to Miss Maude Dysert, the daughter of Frederick Sharretts Dysert, a native of Gettysburg. Mr. Sharretts was one of the first young men to enlist in |
