Doctor Powelson is identified with the Cambria County Medical Society, Pennsylvania State and American Medical Associations. He served on the Homestead School Board at Homestead, Pa., for 17 years, as secretary and president of the board.
Dr. Henry W. Salus is among the most prominent physicians and surgeons of Johnstown, where he is also the owner of a private hospital. Doctor Salus was born in Philadelphia, April 17, 1879, and is the son of Abraham and Barbara (Wieder) Salus.
Abraham Salus, deceased, was a native of Bohemia. After coming to this country he settled in Philadelphia, where he spent the remainder of his life as a provision dealer. He founded the whole sale provision business of Salus & Sons, which is today one of the largest of the pioneer ventures of that city. Mr. Salus died May 30, 1905, and his wife died April 16, 1921. Both are buried in Frankfort Cemetery, Philadelphia. To Mr. and Mrs. Salus the following children were born: (1) Joseph W., lives in Philadelphia, where he is president of the Broad Street Trust Company, president of Salus & Sons company, and a former member of the New Jersey State Legislature, having been a resident of Atlantic City; (2) Samuel W., an attorney, lives in Philadelphia, has served as a member of the senate for the past 26 years, is now president pro tem of the Pennsylvania State Senate. He also served as assistant district attorney of Philadelphia, a member of the common council and is a member of the school board of Pennsylvania and prominent in political affairs in that city; (3) Lillian, the widow of Simon G. Goldsmith, lives in Atlantic City, where she is the owner of the Kingston Hall Hotel; (4) Dr. Henry W., the subject of this sketch; (5) Benjamin, lives in Philadelphia, where he is identified with Salus & Sons Company as vice president and general manager; (6) Herbert W., an attorney, lives in Philadelphia, is associated with his brother, Senator S.W. Salus, as a partner in the law firm and is prominent in the city's business and social life; (7) May, married Adolph Lorch, president of Lorch Bros., wholesale provision dealers, Philadelphia; and (8) Walter J., lives in Philadelphia, where he is associated with the firm of Salus & Sons Company, as director of the Hotel Supply Department.
