Chalmer R. Dilling. One of the leading business men of Nanty Glo is C. R. Dilling, general contractor and builder, with offices in the Union Bank Building. He was born in Liberty Township, Bedford County, Pa., Aug. 3, 1889, and is the son of George H. and Nancy Ann (Replogle) Dilling.
George H. Dilling, deceased, was a native of Liberty Township, Bedford County. He began life as a farmer, later engaged in the meat business, but due to ill health retired from business and taught school for several terms. He was then connected with the Grand Union Tea Company for 18 years, after which he served as a rural mail carrier for 17 years. He died March 28, 1925, and is buried in Liberty Township. His widow, who was born at Waterside, Pa., died March 25, 1926, at Nanty Glo. Mr. Dilling was a Democrat, served on the school board, and held membership in the Church of the Brethren. To Mr. and Mrs. Dilling ten children were born as follows: Bertha, married H. W. Troutman, lives at Altoona; C. R., the subject of this sketch; J. H., a building contractor, lives at Nanty Glo; Catherine, married Ernest Replogle, lives at Morrison Cove, Pa.; Elizabeth, married Calvin Blough, lives at Windber, Pa.; Paul, a World War veteran, lives at Hopewell, Pa.; William, lives at Everett, Pa.; Ruth, married L. J. Learn, lives at Nettleton, Pa.; Georgia, married John Beaver, lives at Entrekin, Pa.; and Martha, a teacher, lives at Nanty Glo.
C. R. Dilling was educated in the public schools of Liberty Township and learned the carpenter's trade in the employ of his uncle, J. H. Dilling, at Windber. He served as foreman of the Windber Lumber Company for 12 years and in 1917 was transferred to Nanty Glo by that company. He was later connected with the Heisley Coal Company, and in January, 1919, in partnership with T. P. Burns and H. F. Dorr, established the Nanty Glo Lumber and Construction Company. Mr. Dilling was elected secretary of the company and also served as manager until July, 1921, at which time he established the Dilling-Barnhart Contracting Company, in partnership with his brother J. H. Dilling and I. E. Barnhart. This partnership continued until January, 1924, when each member of the firm engaged in business for himself.
In July, 1909, Mr. Dilling was married to Miss Charlotte Viola Park, a daughter of T. N. and Anna (Norris) Park, natives of Huntingdon
