On Jan. 1, 1905, he was appointed assistant postmaster under Levi J. Foust. He served three terms as clerk of the common council. On April 13, 1922, he was appointed postmaster. John L. Cover is assistant postmaster. The present postoffice building was completed in 1914 at a cost of $120,000. There are 150 people employed at this office.
On Sept. 26, 1901, Mr. Davis was married to Miss Mary VonLunen, a daughter of Louis and Emily (Griffith) VonLunen. To Mr. and Mrs. Davis two children have been born: Beatrice VonLunen, a graduate of Goucher College, Baltimore, now a teacher in the Johnstown schools; and Winston Louis, attending Pennsylvania State College.
Mr. Davis is a member of Johnstown Lodge No. 742, F. and A. M.; Portage Royal Arch Masons No. 195; Oriental Commandery No. 61, Knights Templar; Pittsburgh Consistory; Jaffa Temple, Altoona; Knights of Pythias; Woodmen of the World; Tall Cedars of Lebanon; Shrine Club, Cambria Council; and Susquehanna Country Club. He is president of the Johnstown Motor Club, and has served as president of the Moxham Progress Club. Mr. Davis is a director of each of the Title Trust and Guarantee Company and Marrellville Deposit Bank. He is also interested in the Piney Run Mine Company. He is a member of the board of managers of the Conemaugh Valley Memorial Hospital, Johnstown, Pa. In politics he is a Republican.
Frank J. Lauer is among Nanty Glo's reliable and excellent business men, where he is proprietor of the Lauer Motor Company. He was born at Phillipsburg, Pa., April 11, 1885, and is a son of Peter and Mary A. (Hebe) Lauer.
Peter Lauer was born in Saarbroeken, Germany, June 15, 1858, and died Sept. 29, 1911. He is buried at Stoyestown, Pa. In 1868 Mr. Lauer came to this country from Germany and settled at Morris Run, Pa., where he was employed in the mines. He later lived at Phillipsburg. He was a Democrat and a member of the Lutheran Church. His widow was born in Tioga County, Pa., and resides at Nanty Glo. To Mr. and Mrs. Lauer 12 children were born, as follows: (1) William, employed by the Pennsylvania Railroad, live at Altoona; (2) George, salesman, lives at Johnstown, Pa.; (3) Edward, general merchant, lives at Hooversville, Pa.; (4) Frank J., the subject of this sketch; (5) Effie, deceased; (6) Mary, married G. V. Ankeny, lives at Johnstown, where he is connected with the Bethlehem Steel Company; (7) Lucilla, deceased; (8) Mariam, deceased; (9) Henry
