Strongstown, Indiana County; and Merritt B. (see forward). Samuel Schultz died in 1905, his wife in 1913.
Dr. Merritt B. Schultz born near Strongstown, Indiana County, Pa., received his early education in the public schools of the township and in the Greenville Academy. A student by natural inclination, he became a successful teacher, following this occupation for two years. At the same time he became interested in the study of medicine and read and worked under the preceptorship of Dr. E. H. Dickey, of Strongstown. Later Doctor Schultz entered the Columbus Medical College at Columbus, Ohio (now known as the Medical Department of Ohio State University), and from which he graduated with the degree of Doctor of Medicine in 1892. He registered as a physician in Pennsylvania and immediately entered on the practice of his profession in Strongstown, his birthplace. Here he continued as a successful doctor for a period of ten years, followed by three years of equally successful work and practice in Philadelphia. While in Philadelphia he enrolled as a post graduate student at the Polyclinic Hospital in which he later became assistant to Dr. John B. Roberts for two years. Interested in furthering his study in chemistry he entered the Medico-Chirurgical College of Pharmacy from which he graduated in 1904 and became a licensed pharmacist in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Washington, District of Columbia, West Virginia and Texas. He then became associated with Doctor Christian at the Medico-Chirurgical College in the genito-urinary department for a period of six months. Doctor Schultz came to Johnstown, Pa., Jan. 1, 1905, locating in Moxham and building up one of the largest medical practices in the city. In addition to various real estate holdings, he built at the corner of Grove Avenue and Village Street the Moxham Pharmacy, a completely equipped and modern drug store which enjoys a large patronage.
Doctor Schultz first married Miss Rebecca Widdowson of Dixonville, Pa., who died in 1899, leaving two children: Gussie Rebecca, now superintendent nurse of the Lankenau Maternity Hospital at Philadelphia, and Charles Hamilton, who graduated with degree of Doctor of Medicine from the Medical College of George Washington University at Washington, D. C., and who is a registered physician in Pennsylvania and the District of Columbia. Throughout the World War Dr. Charles H. Schultz served in the Medical Corps and later became associated with his father in practicing medicine in Johnstown, Pa. He married Miss Margaret Gohn Ambrose, Nov. 26, 1924.
