The membership consists of about 90 families. The congregation contemplates the erection of a new edifice in the near future.
    In 1910 Father Horak built a parsonage, an eight-room all modern brick structure at 1004 Main Street. In 1921 Rev. F. Jevnik installed in the church a pipe organ, at a cost of $2,100. The church organization owns five lots on Prospect Street.




    William Brown, of Portage, has gained prominence throughout Pennsylvania and West Virginia in connection with the coal industry, in which he is extensively interested. He was born in Scotland, Jan. 12, 1866, and is the son of William and Janet (Stuart) Brown.
    William Brown, deceased, emigrated to this country from Scotland in 1871 and settled in Westmoreland County, Pa., where he worked in the mines. He died in 1878. To Mr. and Mrs. Brown three children were born: Alexander, Swissvale, Pa.; William, the subject of this sketch; and Janet, deceased. Janet (Stuart) Brown was later married to John McCauley, and to this union one child was born: Margaret, who married David Fowler, lives at Portage. John McCauley died in 1887, and his wife died in 1920 and is buried at Houtzdale, Pa.
    William Brown was five years of age when his parents came to this county. He attended the public schools of Sharon and Mercer, Pa., and at an early age entered the coal mines of Pennsylvania. In 1901 he became interested in the hotel business at Windber, and later lived at Kerrmoore, Pa., where he owned and operated a hotel. In 1910 he returned to the mines as superintendent of the Shoemaker Coal Company of Portage, and remained eight years with this company. He then, in 1916, with Mr. A. G. Groke, formed the Myra Coal Company, and later sold this to Senator Thompkins. He now has an interest in the Sonman Coal Company of Portage. He is also interested in the Kanawha Black Band Coal Company of West Virginia, the later of which he is president. For several years he was associated in business with A. G. Groke as operators of the B. & G. Coal Company of Portage.
    On Dec. 25, 1888, Mr. Brown was united in marriage with Miss Bertha Burchill, the daughter of George and Sarah (Coleman) Burchill, both deceased. Mrs. Brown is a native of Houtzdale, Pa. To Mr. and Mrs. Brown the following children were born: Sarah Coleman, married Gerald Korb, live at Portage, and they have five children, Donald, William, Bertha,
