HISTORY OF CAMBRIA COUNTY 931

    On May 15, 1910, Mr. Black married Miss Lulu Long, of Diamondville, Pa., the daughter of A. J. and Elizabeth Long, both deceased. They have three children; Edwin Harold, Thelma Louise, and Louise Elizabeth.
    Mr. Black is a Republican and a member of the Christian Church. He has a wide acquaintance throughout Cambria County.




    William H. Hess has been prominently identified with the business interests of Portage since 1898, where he is proprietor of the Superior Steam Baking Company. He was born in Westphalia, Germany, July 8, 1872, and is a son of A. H. and Dorothy (Bruening) Hess.
    A. H. Hess was born in Germany in 1845 and died in 1880. His widow emigrated to America with her children several years after her husband's death and settled in Cambria County, where she was later married to Louis Walters. By her first marriage Mrs. Walters had the following children: William H., the subject of this sketch; Henry, lives at Endicott, N. Y., Augusta, deceased, was the wife of J. C. Lauffer; and August H. lives at Portage. By her second marriage Mrs. Walters had the following children: Emma, married first William Laymon, deceased, later married Archie Chisholm, lives in Johnstown; Frederick, lives at Lilly, Pa.; Dora died in infancy; and Edna, married Irvin Diehl, lives in Johnstown. Mr. and Mrs. Walters reside at Portage.
    William H. Hess was a boy of ten years when his mother brought him to America. He has since lived in Portage with the Exception of five years, which were spent in San Diego, Cal., where he was connected with the Southern California Baking Company. On his return to Portage Mr. Hess formed a partnership with his brother-in-law, E. J. Herr. This continued until 1919, when Mr. Hess became sole owner of the Superior Steam Baking Company. The company operates four trucks and covers territory throughout Portage, Lilly, Puritan, Spring Hill, Beaverdale, Wilmore, Summerhill, South Fork, and Ehrenfeld.
    On Jan. 4, 1898, Mr. Hess was united in marriage at Portage with Miss Gissalla Herr, who was born in Austria in 1879 and died in 1917. To this union the following children were born; Gilbert D. married Jessie Stager, and they have a daughter, Marjorie; Pearl, married Jack Moore, and they have a son, William Hess Moore, lives at Portage; Viola, an accomplished musician, lives at home; Otto, died at the age of two years; Graham Grant and Frederick employed by their father; Edna, at home; Mabel, deceased;
