Marie, Isabel, and Jean, all at home; and two children died in infancy. In June, 1924, Mr. Hess was married to Mrs. Nina M. Pletcher, the widow of George W. Pletcher, artist of Lock Haven. Pa. Mrs. Hess was a supervising principal of Clinton County, and a teacher in the Cambria County schools and at Altoona. She was educated in the schools of Lock Haven, Normal School, and attended Columbia University, and has also been a member of the faculty of Chautauqua, N. Y., summer schools. Mrs. Hess is active in the Twentieth Century Club of Portage. Martin C. Madigan, chief of Police at Portage, is not only a very capable official, but one of the most efficient and reliable citizens of Cambria County. He was born at Danbury, Conn., Nov. 27, 1864, and is the son of Martin and Anna (Nash) Madigan. Martin Madigan, deceased, was a veteran of the Civil war. He was born in Ireland in 1816 and was a bricklayer and plasterer by trade. When a young man he emigrated to this country and settled in Connecticut, where he spent the remainder of his life. He served throughout the Civil war and died in 1896. His wife, also born in Ireland, died in 1910, at the age of 85 years. To Mr. and Mrs. Madigan the following children were born; Martin C. the subject of this sketch; Richard, lives at Gallitzin; John, lives at Johnstown; Stephen, lives at Johnstown; Margaret, married John Gimble, lives at Johnstown; Thomas, deceased; and four children died in infancy. Martin C. Madigan attended the district schools and when a small boy removed to Massachusetts with his parents. Later he lived in Tioga County, Pa., for 13 years, where he worked in the mines. He spent 12 years in the same occupation at Houtzdale and has lived at Portage since 1892. Mr. Madigan served as constable here for 26 years and has held the office of chief of police since 1923. On March 22, 1880, Mr. Madigan was united in marriage with Miss Anna Kiley, Houtzdale, the daughter of John and Joanna Kiley, both deceased.
