Thomas J. Pearce, deceased, was for many years a prominent and highly esteemed citizen of Portage, where he had extensive business interests. He was born in Wales, the son of George and Ellen Pearce. George Pearce was born in Wales in 1839 and died in 1910. He was prominently identified with the mining interests of Cambria County and owned and operated the George Pearce and Sons Coal Mine at Portage, formerly the Last Chance Mine. He also owned and operated a hotel for a number of years at Brisbin, Pa. His wife died in 1901. To Mr. and Mrs. Pearce seven children were born, all of whom are deceased except William, who lives at Huntingdon, Pa., and Mrs. Patterson, who lives at Portage. Thomas J. Pearce spent his boyhood at Brisbin and attended the schools there. At an early age he became interested in his father's mines and at the time of his death in 1914 was operating the Hog Hole Mine at Portage. He was one of the organizers and stockholders of the Portage Light & Power Company and was vice president of the First National Bank. Mr. Pearce served as mayor of Portage and as a member of the school board. He had resided here since 1888. On Oct. 23, 1887, Mr. Pearce was married at Brisbin to Miss Margaret T. Lange, who was born in Germany, the daughter of Robert L. and Mary (Heinery) Lange. The Lange's were early settlers of Houtzdale and Brisbin, where Mr. Lange was prominent as a building contractor. He died in 1901 and his wife died in 1887. They are buried at Brisbin. To Thomas J. and Margaret T. (Lange) Pearce were born six children: Hester Vermelia Hohnka, lives at Clymer, Pa.; Nellie May, married Doctor Schultz, lives at Castle Shannon, Pa.; James Garfield, died in 1918, at the age of 22 years; Wilbert Ernest, married Jane Barr, lives at Johnstown; |
