Ferris, married Julia West, lives at Castle Shannon, Pa.; and Olive, lives at home, is a graduate of Portage High School and Juniata College.
Mr. Pearce was a member of the Episcopal Church, Masonic Lodge, Independent Order of Odd Fellows and Elks Lodge. Mrs. Pearce holds membership in the United Brethren Church, Eastern Star, Ebensburg, Dames of Malta, Twentieth Century Club, Portage, and Oriental Shrine, Altoona. She is secretary and treasurer of the Prospect Cemetery Association in which she takes an active interest. She is prominent in Portage and throughout Cambria County.
Henry Disston Border, deceased, was for many years a prominent and highly esteemed citizen of Portage. He was born in Paint Township, Somerset County, Pa., June 15, 1857, the son of John and Martha (Ripple) Border.
John Border, eldest son of Daniel and Elizabeth (Gabe) Border, was born in Shelburg, Pa., July 28, 1830. His father, Daniel Border, was born in 1804 and was a prominent farmer of Bedord County. He later removed to Somerset County and from there to Davidsville, where he resided until his death in 1874. John Border was a member of the Lutheran church and a stanch Prohibitionist. He was a lawyer by profession and later engaged in the lumber business in Cambria county. He sold his mill to Mears, White & Company in 1866, and remained with them as manager for the following three years, when he removed with his family to Summerhill Township. He died in Portage, Pa., in September, 1897. Mr. Border married Miss Martha Ripple and they had the following children: Henry D., the subject of this sketch; Albert, born Feb. 3, 1859, drowned at the age of two years; Ida, born Dec. 8 1860, married John Green of Portage, and they had the following children: Emily, Harry, Edwin, Reba and Theodore; Emma, born Feb. 24, 1863, married Eugene Hess, died in 1901; Emerson W., Born March 31, 1865, married Eliza Huffman, and one child, Edna; Dillie, born Dec. 10, 1869, married Rochard Bridge of Derry, Pa.; Elmira, born May 22, 1872, married Evan D. Davies, and had two children, Thelma and Zula; Charlotte, born Jan. 16, 1874, married John Wilson, and had one child, Maxwell; Anna R., born May 17, 1876, married John Dugan and had three children, Ray, Juanita and John; Edna, born
