Sept. 27, 1879, married John Logan of Johnstown, and had two children, Glen and Martha.
Henry Disston Border was educated in the public schools of Cambria County and in 1880 took up the study of telegraphy while in the employ of the Pennsylvania Railroad, with whom he was identified for 40 years. Mr. Border died in May, 1919, and is buried in Prospect Cemetery, Portage.
On Nov. 26, 1891, Mr. Border was married to Miss Maude F. Mears, a native of Broad Top, Pa., born March 13, 1870, the daughter of Jacob and Melissa (Ammerman) Mears. Mr. Mears was born in Columbia County, Pa., the son of Dr. George A. Mears, who was a prominent dentist of Philadelphia. He was interested in several industrial concerns. After the Civil War he came to Portage and built three residences, the first to be built here. He had lumber interests here, He died in 1881 and is buried in Broadtop City, Pa. Mr. Jacob Mears died in 1920 and is buried in Wilmore Cemetery. His wife, who was born in Northumberland County, Pa., died in 1893, at the age of 44 years. To Mr. and Mrs. Mears five children were born: Maud F. Border; Ada Minnie, a graduate nurse of the Women's Medical College, Philadelphia; Clara Delilah, a graduate of Juniata College, a teacher in the schools of Conemaugh, Pa.; Bertha Virginia, died in 1892, at the age of 20 years; and Albert Ammerman, lives at Portage, married Jeanette Cooper, and they have four children, Jacob Gerald, Mary Helen, Clara Adelia, and Dorothy Jean. Before her marriage Mrs. Border was a teacher in the schools of Cambria County. To. Mr. and Mrs. Border were born seven children: Harry Oscar, born Jan. 25, 1893, died in infancy; Paul Richard, born Jan. 20, 1895, attended Portage High School and Juniata College, lives at Dormont, Pa., married Amie Haslett, and they have two children, Paul R., Jr., and Eleanor Jean; Melissa Ruth, born Feb. 18, 1897, married S. R. Kellerman, lives at Sonman, Pa., and they have a child, Miriam Jene; Martha Virginia, born Aug. 6, 1899, married Fred S. Funston, lives at Muncie, Pa.; Miriam Rebecca, born June 13, 1901, a graduate of Portage High School and Indiana State Normal School, an instructor in physical education, lives at home; John W., born March 23, 1905, died in infancy; and Mary Elizabeth, born June 27, 1909, a student.
Mr. Border was a life long Republican and was elected the first burgess of Portage in 1891. He also served as a member of the council and for many years was a member of the school board. He held membership in the Lutheran Church and Masonic Lodge. Mrs. Border is a member of
