In politics Mr. Goughnour is a Republican. He is a member of the Progressive Brethren Church and is affiliated with the Knights of Pythias. He is an excellent citizen of Cambria County. Charles Mangus, Portage, is a prosperous farmer of Cambria County, where he has spent practically his entire life. He was born in Somerset County, Pa., Aug. 28, 1864, and is the son of John and Maude (Owens) Mangus. John Mangus, deceased, was a native of Bedford County, Pa., and engaged in general farming during his life time. He died in 1886 and his wife died in 1915. Mr. and Mrs. Mangus had the following children: Charles, the subject of this sketch; Carrie, married Harry Heater, lives at Hastings, Pa.; Mary, married Leon Smith, lives at South Fork; Myrtle, died at the age of 21 years; Reobert, deceased; and Elizabeth, married M. Walker, lives in Ohio. After completing his schooling in the district schools of Cambria County, where the parents of Charles Mangus had moved when he was but a child, he became interested in farming and the raising of stock. He has lived on his present farm near Portage since 1898 and operates 85 acres of good land, which is well improved with a fine residence and farm buildings. Mr. Mangus is also a director and stockholder in the Merchants & Miners Deposit Bank, Portage. On Oct. 13, 1886, Mr. Mangus was united in marriage with Miss Clara Plumer, the daughter of Philip and Eliza (McGough) Plumer, prominent pioneer settlers of Cambria County. Mr. Plumer is deceased and his widow lives at Gallitzin. To. Mr. and Mrs. Mangus have been born six children: Walter, died at the age of 36 years, was the husband of Rose Wilderbrant, and they had five children: Raymond, a Word War veteran, married Miss Elizabeth McGough, lives at Portage; Grace, lives in Johnstown; Edward married Mary Farabough, lives at Portage; Philip, lives in Johnstown, married Beatrice Piper; and Mary, a graduate nurse, lives in Baltimore, Md. Politically, Mr. Mangus is a Democrat and he has served as school directory for eight years. He and his family hold membership in St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Portage, and have a wide acquaintance throughout the county. |
